I completed all my paperwork on March 4 and still haven't heard anything. The law says they have to approve/deny within 45 days but I guess there's a backlog right now. The County Clerk said it was taking closer to 3 months right now.

So how did you have to wait?

What kinds of things did you have to do to get it?

For me my biggest thing was I had to wait for 3 years since my last DUI. I also had to take a day long course on gun safety focusing on home defense. It also included an information lecture from a prominent attorney (he's actually on the board that recommends what laws should/shouldn't be passed). After all that I had to go downtown to the County Clerk with a passport photo and pass a background check. Then all that gets sent off to the state police who do another round of checks, then they forward it all to the gun board who eventually say yes or no.

I really hate waiting.

I live in a state where my constitutional right to keep and bear arms is infringed so I can't answer your question. Feelsbadman.

Took 17 days for me to get my renewal back...which is odd, since NH law requires issuance within 14 days...and I don't even need it in the first place.

Gotta love small towns that don't quite adhere to appropriate procedure..

Here in MI, cops don't have to have a CCW and can carry when off duty even in gun free zones.

2 weeks in PA. PA is a "shall issue" state, meaning if you have a clean record, they have to give you the license. It's not a question of "approving".

Here in Texas a lot of police officers get CHLs so they can skip the NICS phone call and walk out of a gun store with a new gun in less than 10 minutes.

In Virginia the only benefit is you can buy more than one gun a month.

MI is "shall issue" too. They still have to be approved though and since we are broke, I understand that it takes them a while to get everything done. I also don't think its a bad thing to make people wait for a bit. I do think that 3 months is a bit too long though.

I got mine within a month, and that was July of last year. And from what I understand, that has been the average wait time since.

My only experience was getting one when they first debuted, and there was a flood of applications, and helping a friend get hers post-9/11 when there was also a flood of applications.

The last time I did my renewal it only took a month.

Federal law allows us to carry in every state. Only place we are really restricted is courts (gotta follow head judge rules), certain federal buildings and airplanes.

Funny. You say there is a law that says you have to get it within 45 days, but if the state can't do it, that's fine. They don't have to follow their own laws?

That's a little bit of a generalization. In states that allow private property owners to forbid concealed handguns via signage, those areas are still off limits. Also, in states that prohibit the carrying of a firearm by concealed handgun licensees on government property (courts, parks, municipal buildings, police departments, etc.) those areas are still off limits.

Granted you get a lot more latitude carrying with a badge\ID instead of a CHL in most places.

Missouri; 2009

Friday night = 4-5 hour classroom session
Saturday morning = 2-3 hour range qualification
Thursday = obtained request for permit through sheriff's office
1-3 weeks later, can't remember exactly = background check completed and permit + new license obtained.

Private property has always been up to the owner. I was talking about public places.

Not true, in some states private property owners have had their rights to forbid the carrying of concealed handguns stripped from them. Off the top of my head, I think Utah is one of them.

when i got my first permit in the early 80's they were 12 dollars for concealed carry(but they took 1-2 weeks to get) and 6 dollars for a sportsmans permit (you needed this permit to hunt with a handgun)
