As the title suggests, I have a nasty case of heart burn. I Took some Tums about an hour ago and it didn't help so i was going to crack into some Zantac but it says "do not take with other acid reducers"

Does Tums count as an acid reducer? Can I take them both? Can I take them with alcohol? I had some beers at dinner.

Tums is a short-lasting antacid, but isn't really going to interfere with Zantac. They're more concerned with taking Zantac in addition to a PPI like omeprazole.

If you're having really, really bad heartburn you might want to give omeprazole a shot. It's generic Prilosec/Prilosec OTC, and has become relatively cheap.

I think you should asess your diet.
One time I got the flu and was hypersensitive to hydorgenated vegetable oil for like six months. Finally I was able to stomach cmall amounts of it and now I'm fine with it. Wierd but true.

Take a look at what you're eating that triggers the reflux, cut back and try a probiotic (not religiously, just a few occasionally). That's what helped me.

I live with GERD (I have what amounts to a balloon off of my esophagus that allows acid to collect), which requires me to take a 20mg omeprazole each day to keep my heartburn in check. If I miss a day, it can get pretty bad. Two days? Feels like a heart attack.

Hope the zantac takes care of it.

Go to a GI or just take prilosec religiously. GERD --> Barrett's esophagus --> Adenocarcinoma.

Yes you can and it works! What I'll do often is take a bottle of baking soda water with me to dinner. If I feel any reflux after dinner, I'll sip the baking soda water and take generic zantac. Baking soda soothes the stomach initially until zantac has time to kick in.

Let me tell you this, it is MUCH cheaper to do this versus taking prilosec. Prilosec costs around 50 cents a pill and you need to take two pills to maintain it's effectiveness! I can get baking soda for almost free and generic zantac (equate) costs me 5 cents a pill. What I'll do sometimes is break a 150mg pill into two doses. I'll use a dose after lunch and another one after dinner. Works like a charm. I can buy 1 year's worth of generic zantac with the money it costs for 3 weeks worth of prilosec.

Hopefully, HybridSquirrel does not still have the heartburn after 7 years.

I find Zantac helps for several days then rapidly loses its effect. For me at least Pepcid works just as well and seems to take longer develop a tolerance.

Omeprazole may cost more but 20mg a day keeps working for me regardless of how many days in a row I use it.

That's why you should use it in conjunction with tums ( or baking soda). When you take tums, the ph of your stomach changes and your body tries to compensate by making more acid. Zantac reduces acid production, so zantac is used more to reduce side effects of taking tums. It's a very potent combo.

Wow 2009 necro??

I use apple cider vinegar. Just chug a swig real quick. Hurts really bad for a minute (like lava-bad, plus it smells/tastes horrible), but then you start feeling better after a minute or two. Works better than any of the commercial meds I've tried!

I'm thinking some of you should go see a doctor if you're have to take antacids, PPIs or H2 blockers that much.

Isn't that adding acid to acid? You want an alkaline.

Don't take antacids! If you're having this problem on a regular basis, then you need to either adjust your diet and or eating habits! First thing I can suggest if you have heart burn is drink some milk and see if it calms your stomach.

Drink cream or milk for a heartburn remedy.

Myth.Your mother or grandmother might have recommended this remedy, but they weren't privy to the latest scientific findings. Doctors do not recommend drinking milk to reduce heartburn, as it has been proven that milk temporarily reduces the symptoms only to later increase acid production by the stomach, which causes more heartburn.

I know this is a necro but long-term use of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) is now associated with some serious consequences. Good ol' ranitidine (Zantac) should always be tried first, and are safe to use with antacid, but lifestyle changes are far preferred over dependence on PPIs or histamine blockers.

Everyone is different; what helped me initially was not eating for at least 4 hours before bed, and raising the head of the bed on cinder blocks. But what virtually cured me was carb restriction and weight loss. The last time I had a problem was drinking alcohol and eating chocolate too close to bedtime, big mistake!

Nah, because that's not the whole story. It's actually counter-intuitive; many people who have acid reflux & GERD actually have low stomach acid; if that's the case, then the basic temporary-fix idea is that you want to raise the acid level. If you get reflux, try taking a tablespoon of ACV & then drinking a cup of water & see if you feel better after ten minutes. It's nasty stuff, but all I can say is that it works for me.

If you're getting chronic reflux, usually the easiest way to see if you can fix it is to cut out sugar & processed foods for a few weeks & eat a bunch of fermented stuff (kefir, kraut, yogurt, etc.). Throw in a probiotic pill if you want to. Basically switch to eating homemade stuff for a few weeks like basic chicken, steamed veggies, that sort of thing. A lot of people who have recurring acid eat a crappy diet & don't want to change, so it's easier to include an OTC medication than to fix the root cause.

Same here. Adjusted my diet & stopped eating a couple hours before bed. It's not a death sentence for food either, just look up keto-friendly recipes if carbs kill you. Everybody's body chemistry is different, so you just have to figure out what's up with yours & adjust as necessary. No more Tums next to the bed woot woot
