If so, where did you manage to find yours, and do you have any tips for someone who is interested in purchasing a toyger kitten/cat?

I have been trying off and on to purchase a toyger cat for ~5 years now but have been unable to do so for a number of reasons (seems like supply <<<<<<< demand). Now it seems like every Toyger breeder's website has not been updated since geocities and AOL dominated the internet.

5 years?

I just went to wikipedia and they have a link to the breeder homepage, http://toygers.org/, the breeder homepage has a list of breeders, the first link is broken, the second, http://alurentoygers.com/ , is maybe not the greatest website in the world, but it has an available kittens page http://alurentoygers.com/available/kittens/ that was updated on May 13 and says they just had a litter, and please call us.

Cute cat(s). I am fascinated with this breed they can be leashed and walked. Breed isn't allowed to own as a pet in my state.

I've heard Savannahs are half way between domesticated and wild, and they don't tend to get along well with other pets, like, they'll kill your dog. I'd be more nervous around one of these things than a pit bull.

Yeah, they had one of these on the TV show "my cat from hell." It basically was a feral cat, and someone was trying to keep one as a pet indoors. They were able to get the thing from attacking humans on sight only by building ledges into the wall so it could go up high and away from the human activity in the room. They mentioned on the show that the cat would never end up as a lap cat.

If that's the case, why bother?

They are. There is some African wild cat in them. I don't think there is a danger to other pets though. They still have a strong hunt instinct, I saw an animal planet show about one that was lost during a move survived a summer in some mid western state. The cat put weight on (he was over weight) when they found him. He truly lived off the fat of the land and prospered. I guess that is why you cannot own them as pets in my state.

Well you get it as a kitten and don't allow that to happen. Honestly if I could own one I probably wouldn't just because it would be a pain in the ass.

I came into this thread expecting a mashup of Toyotas and the Voyager spacecraft. I am leaving disappointed.

I said 5 years for a variety of reasons. The main reason being that my (now deceased) male cat would not tolerate a new cat. Also - Aluren is the only breeder I've found that will actually respond to inquiries.

We had a Bengal. We just looked up breeders in the area, contacted them, did a home visit then put a deposit down on a future kitten when we were satisfied in her setup. Amazing cat, but he played too aggressively with our other, older male cat and caused stress pee issues. We adopted him out to another Bengal owner who had siblings from the same litter.

Same breeder also bred Savannah's. She had an amazing, huge F2, which was much more "wild" than the resulting F3 litters. All her kittens were well socialized with people, dogs and other cats. Our older male is a big sensitive pussy, but he had seniority.

On the episode I saw, they were able to help the Savannah "chill" by introducing a bunch of exercise (including a large cat wheel, like a gerbil's). And taking it on walks around its block so the cat thought it had a territory.

There was also a "too cute" episode with kittens. They are an amazing creature...but a bit too wild to be worthwhile.

I'd looked at Bengals myself, not familiar with Toygers, but I doubt wither would get along the two we have now really.

Bengals would be fun though as they swim and letting one out to swim in the pool would freak em out, I wonder if they'd try it when they saw one doing it :p

They are both pretty big at 16 lbs, but a Bengal might freak em out a bit.

Have you considered the breeder's website was never updated because the toyger ate him?
