NEC3500a vs. Sony dru710a (Retail)?

hey guys,

I decided that I don't think i'm going to be able to pay $140-180 for the 16x DVD Plextor 716a or the BENQ 16x. The SATA isn't any improvement on these speed wise either.

I already knew a little about the nec3500a and that people really liked it. Plus it does 4x on dual layer writes. Ok but it comes with no software. Nero Ultra costs $86.00 which is pretty dang expensive. I could use DVD shrink for free and use my old copy of plextor disc dupe for CD-R/W copying and Adaptec Easy CD Creator for CDRW's but I have nothing for DVD's at all. I can get the DVD shrink for backup copying of DVD's but I have nothing for burning.

-So the NEC3500a is on sale for $63.00, wow... Ok. One of the best values I have ever seen I think.

***** BUT I keep looking and find the Sony 16x dru710a retail also on sale for $89.00. It comes with Nero Ultra which is $86.00. So if I buy that i'm getting the drive for 3 dollars basically.

Specifications:
Write Speed:16X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 48X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 2.4X DVD+R DL
Read Speed: 48X CD-ROM, 16X DVD-ROM
Features: Buffer Underrun Proof technology

-It says 2.4x DVD+R Dual layer... -Will it do 4x like the NEC? -What about Book Type settings?

What are the pro's and con's? Looks like the Sony is slower on a few of the the specs?

I think the sale ends in 20 mintues 🙁
give me some feedback guys,

thanks

Hmm besides the software with the Sony it lacks a few things that the NEC has. NEC lists DVD+R9 Sony doesn't (have no clue what that is lol) and the NEC boasts a 16x DVD -r while the sony only has 8x on the -r

both look good. I think im going to order two of the NEC's (one for a friend, he loves cheap deals)

Going to get reamed buying software though to burn with. That is dissapointing. Makes me want to get the plextor sorta

The NEC 3500a is a great DVD burner.

No DVD-RAM if IIRC.

This I know... The sony looks great too. I'm just trying to get some feedback.

The Sony burner is basically free when compared to the NEC since you get Nero Ultra with it

what is DVD-RAM?
