NEC Warranty...or lack thereof...

My brother purchased an NEC MultiSync 1700M+ LCD monitor from Circuit City back in October 2001 for $899.99...well, about a year later he sold it to me for $250 because he did not use it that often and couldn't justify keeping it...

Anyway, it is still under warranty until October 2004 and I would like to send it back because the cable needs replaced...
To make a long story short...I gave them a call and told them I would like to send it back for repairs but they require I have either a proof of purchase or the purchase date...neither of which I have and because I do not have them it is now considered not under warranty...

I tried to call Circuit City for a copy of the receipt but they needed the phone number under which it was purchased...my brother always gives bogus numbers because he finds it ridiculous that every other store asks you for a phone number when purchasing anything from a $900 monitor to a $1.19 20oz Diet Coke...at any rate...they were unable to help me so I have one final option...their website (NEC's) clearly states that they need either a proof of purchase or a purchase date...I am probably going to call tomorrow morning and say I bought it October 1st 2001 and if that doesn't work I will call back and say October 2nd, October 3rd...etc...etc...

Has anyone else had this much trouble getting service for a product they didnt have a receipt for but is still under warranty through the manufacturer...?

I don't see how they are dirty bastards, asking for a receipt is pretty much standard practice for proof of purchase in warranty claims.

I agree, they're not asking for too much since they do need proof it's still under the warrantee.

I hate the proof of purchase thing.
If the item's manufacture date is well under warranty period, i think they should honor it without question.

A lot of peopel do not keep receipts and such or after couple of years, it can get lost really easliy.

Wait, so you have no proof to show that you're under warranty, but NEC is a bunch of dirty cocks? Oh man, the logic boggles the mind!

Doesn't sound like they are asking for much.

No, they aren't but the guy who I talked to seemed like an arrogant prick...and he was eating while talking to me...very annoying...christ, he isn't George Costanza...

How did your brother pay for it? I know it was a while ago, but CC can look it up by other means.

He paid for it with a Verizon corporate credit card...I told them this but they still needed the phone number...

He no longer works for Verizon...he hasn't worked for them in like 2 years...

I aggree with isekii... If you look at most/all products, usually there's a production date stamped on the casing. If the date shown that the product is well within warranty, they should honor it. There's no freaking way in hell do I have the ability to manufacture something even before the manufacturer does.

They can also look it up by his entire name & address. If he gave bogus info there too, he's a dumbass & you're SOL

Believe it or not I mentioned that to the woman I talked to from Circuit City...she said the ONLY way they can look it up is by Phone Number and Full Name (his name did not bring up anything)...I may try their corporate office if all else fails...

Corporate wouldn't do you ANY good. The CSR probably had a line & maybe you were angry b/c you didn't recieve any info. Looking up by name, which seems to be your last resort, takes the most time b/c it pulls up every customer in the system with the same last name, then you have to go through each one and eliminate the others by the address. Its time consuming and a pain in the ass. My suggestion, go into the store during the week, before 4/5 pm if you can. Be polite, patient, and see if you can get a nice CSR to help you out.

Yeah, I'll probably do that if my NEC phone call fails again...

JOOO sir... are STUPID for being a big TURD.. go smell some fresh air

it really isnt cc or nec fault... its more for ur bro that he provided a BOGUS number on a $900 purchase...

How do you expect them to honor a warrantee if you don't tell them when you bought it . . .it could be out of warrantee for all they know.

Is it really that hard to find out? Have your bro go over his records and find the CC charge, that'll date it for you.

You are in the wrong, they are being reasonable, so stuff it and buy your own cord, or figure out how to get them the info they need.

Thanks for your worthless comment...I'll get them to fix it for free one way or the other...

First of all, they know it's in warranty from the serial number on the back of the monitor...
Secondly, he no longer has the credit card nor any of the records...
And last but not least...I cannot simply buy my own cord because this cord is wired into the monitor and NEC specifically told me that I would have to send it to them to have it repaired...

seriously dude, the best thing is just to see what kind of cable connection it is inside, and research.. goodluck with NEC

I called them this morning and they are going to ship me another monitor as long as I ship them this defective monitor back when I receive the new one...if I don't then they will charge my credit card...probably a 300% mark-up too...at any rate, it seems everything worked out...right on...
