NEC TV: Is it worth the time and effort to fix?

My parents have ~10-year-old 27" NEC TV which has a failed blue phosphor/lamp. So, as you can imagine, everything has a wonderful reddish-greenish tint. Other than the missing blue, the unit seems to be in great condition.

Given that NEC has been out of the TV business for a few years, I'm wondering if it will be very difficult to find replacement parts. And if I am that lucky, is it still worth the effort to move the 100+ pound unit a good 30 to 60 miles to the closest repair shop.

Any thoughts?

that depends on whether its a pix tube failure or just a blue driver transistor... if it is a tube you might just as well replace it... replacement tubes (installed) run in the nieghborhood of $300... to replace the blue drive transistor will cost you approx. $100

my father simply refuses to get a new TV. He bought an NEC a few years ago, it was already old...

it works, as in the TV still gets and shows images. but the color really sucks... imagine playing games on it... :(

Hmm, can only the blue "go out" in a picture tube failure? Shouldn't all colors be affected by that?

I need to visit some TV repair shops in the northern VA area to get a good feel of what to do. I'm sure you can find comparable/better 27" units these days in the $300 range. And everyon'es got to get a new box by 2006 anyway (thank you, Congress!)
