jus got a nec 2510a and tested it by writing a dvd-r

i used bulkpaq 8 speed media an wrpte at 8 speed but it jus seemed slow.

jus ripped a dvd for divx'ing and....well 4.4x max speed is pretty crap

would it have anything to do with the ide drivers? which are the latest from nvidia for the Nforce 3 250gb, or the new rounded ide cables i jus bought?

an 8x write should probably be ~8 minutes
4x is ~15

The 4x dvdread speed is due to riplock - it locks the maximum speed to about 5x on dvd movies, there are unofficial firmwares to remove the lock and make the drive region free.

This MIGHT be different with the nforce3, but the nforce2 had horrible ide drivers from nvidia, reverting to the generic microsoft drivers solved various cd/dvd read/write problems.

Many people buy a second plain dvd-rom drive in order to rip at faster speed because of the riplock
issues. Also allows disc to disc burns.. they are only $30 for a dvd-rom stand alone

liteon's 166s dvd-rom model is 16x player

You could always just look at the time in the burning program
