NEC ND-3540A Black @ newegg, now $62.99 + free SH

The 3540 has support for DVD-R DL and the 3420 doesn't, but DVD-R DL media probably can't be found.

🙁 And I just bought a 3520 a few days ago. Oh well, I don't plan on using DL media for a long time, and even if I do, I can use +R.

me too, but the way i think about it, i barely burn cd-r's, so the 3520 should be good enough since it can do everything albeit slower

Personally, I like the upgrade to 32x cd-rw support from 24x before. I still use those for burning music files and my disks are 32x only. Been waiting for that one.

The only big difference I see is that there MIGHT be Lightscribe support based on the linked article. I can't see anything from the Newegg specs that indicates Lightscribe, and there aren't any LS logos on the bezel in the pics, so it is possible that this feature got dropped after the article was written. Lightscribe might be a cool feature to have if the discs drop in price so they are close to vanialla CD-Rs.

According to the link I posted, LS/Light Scribe is stated to be added into NEC's upcoming 4550A & 3XXXA (X = unknown) models in the 3rd quarter of this year & not the one that NewEgg has available now (3540A).

Looks like some faster read speeds but nothing huge in terms of advantage. It will probably be my next ROM drive purchase should I work on another PC soon...

Slightly faster DL speeds, slightly faster reading of CD and DVD RW discs. Writing on +R/-R, which is what most people will do most of the time, is no faster. Fine drive as a first in your system, but no reason to upgrade from 3500 or 3520.

Yep, same here.
just picked up my 3520 two weeks ago. So far i have had excellent burns with it.

..ordered my 3520 friday..still waiting for it. I don't feel that bad about it..it's still a good drive. Everybody seems to like it. For what I want to do it's just fine.

Sorry, I was confused by the wording. It is hard to tell what drive they are talking about in regards to LightScribe:

What is interesting is the planned 16x DVD RAM write support on the ND-4550A Super Multi (TBD) as well as 7x DVD-R D/L and 12x DVD+/-R RW support planned for the ND-3540A 16x Dual and ND-4550A Super Multi (TBD) drives as well as Light scribe support.

That's a sentance in dire need of a few commas.

Thanks for the clarification, though.🙂
