NEC ND-3520A only being recognized as a CD-ROM

I bought a new DVD burner (NEC ND-3520A) to replace my old Pioneer burner

But for some reason, WinXP only recognizes it as a CD-ROM drive instead of a DVD-RW drive, therefore, my burning software (Nero) doesn't recognize the new burner as an acceptable recorder.

I have no idea why WinXP doesnt recognize it properly

I've tried switching the cables between master/slave, uninstalling/re-installing the DVD-burner, etc.

My old Pioneer drive is recognized by WinXP CORRECTLY each and every time. I tested it out by taking out the NEC drive and putting back my old Pioneer burner, and it was recognized by windows perfectly.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance

It's set to auto-detect in BIOS already, so it detects it each and every time I start the PC

What motherboard chipset and what IDE/ATAPI driver?

If Nvidia chipset and you're using the Nvidia IDE/ATAPI driver, Try rolling back the driver to the standard Windows IDE/ATAPI driver. That worked for me.

Hope this helps!

It's an old ECS mobo, not sure of chipset

Using standard Windows IDE/ATAPI drivers

Like I said, it worked perfectly with my old Pioneer burner

Does it identify correctly in the BIOS?
Can you use some tool, like those included in Nero, to check it? What does it say?

Did you go into Device Manager and set a DVD Region for the new drive yet?

I happen to have the same burner and my retail Nero 5.5 doesn't recognize it, which makes my face look like this --> :( I'm going to try a trial version of Nero 6.6 that I downloaded from Nero, and see how that goes... back in a few with a report.

The NEC is being recognized by the Nero 6.6 Demo and played a DVD movie disc. Might be time for us both to upgrade our Nero :)

You could try patching your burining software with its latest drive definition file (Roxio) or update to the latest rev of Nero that your base version is capable of. They often don't update drive definitions on old versions of burning software. So you end up having to upgrade to the latest version of software to support the newest drives. It's a racket, I know.
. There is some other brand of burning software that is supposed to use some sort of algorithm to set drive parameters instead of needing a parameter database like Roxio and Nero - can't recall the name of it though. So theoretically it wouldn't need to be updated as new drives appear.
. Might also be a good idea to install Adaptec's ASPI layer software - I know it's supposed to be just for SCSI, but it seems to help some weird optical drive happenings.

In my case, I have the latest Nero 5.5 update and it didn't recognize the drive as a burner of any sort. Maybe they'll bring out an update for 5.5 by the time this 6.6 Demo expires on me :(

If they did that how could they rook you outta 20 bucks? LOL.

Not sure who's the bigger crooks: the warez users or the software companies.

5.5 won't be updated with new drive definitions. You can go to the nero web site and you can see their list of supported drives and the version number where support starts for your particular drive. I don't see any NEC DVD burners on the list for ver. 5.x. So you are correct, it's v.6.x for you...

I see that nero has their own ASPI layer software if you'd rather use theirs instead of Adaptec's - it's on their download pages.
