NEC DVD Issue

I have the NEC DVD RW ND-2500A drive, along with my Sony CD-RW CRX320E.

The current NEC drive will not work. It basically freezes the drive whenever I try to do something with it.

Inside of "My Computer" it shows the NEC as "DVD-RW Drive" which is 100% correct. However, whenever media is put inside, it changes to "CD Drive"

My Sony drive works fine, no problems at all. Any ideas what might be going on with my NEC? I thought I upgraded the firmware on this awhile ago...

Should I try this: http://drivers.softpedia.com/g...0A-firmware-109a.shtml

Just to add, I am currently using this firmware: http://support.necsam.com/OEM/...rmware/readme.asp?ID=4 version 1.07.

There's nothing wrong w/ the DVD-RW icon changing to CD Drive icon after blank media is inserted, my Lite-On and NEC burner does that too and it burns fine with Nero. As for the freeze part, you probably flashed with some bad firmware. Go to The Firmware Page and get some real firmware for your NEC. And if you need more info on these firmware, check out the NEC sub forum over at club.cdfreaks.com

Which one would I download?

Also, the firmware I used was straight from NEC's website...

I don't want to make it region free, nor want the bitsetting option to change DVD+R to DVD-ROM...

I just want to get my problem fixed, if one of the above will fix my issue, then I would be more than happy to do it. Just let me know which one I should try.

My 2500a is a total piece of crap too. I have tried damn near every firmware available and it still sucks. My system has seriously not been right since I bought this a few months back. Problem is... it is damn near impossible to pin the problems to the drive. But here is a short list.

Only burns at 24x max unless making a data disk, then 32x will work. Should always be 32x.
Blue screens (which I feared were memory related)
CD-ROM error showing up in the event viewer
Will not read some CDs, no problems with DVDs.

This thing pisses me off. I am getting very close to tossing it and getting a LITE-ON. I don't know why I even bothered with a non LITE-ON drive. I would RMA it but that can be just as big a pain in the ass.
