NEC DVD Burner

In stalled my DVD burner but it is connecting as a Compact Disk rather than a DVD burner. I also kept my CD so I have both. What did I do wrong?

What do you mean its connecting as a compact disc? Is it showing up in the bios startup screen as a ATAPI device? Or do you mean in windows its showing up only as a cd-rom drive?

for my 3500a, the last bubble that popped up when it automatically installed it was something about a CD Rom drive, could be what you're meaning, check the My Computer window with no media in the drive.

I just plugged my NEC ND3500A in, and shuffled my oldish Ricoh DVDRom/CDRW into master on the cable. both drives windows show as "CD drive" in my computer, but device manager shows up their proper names and Nero just burnt to it fine. If i right click and go to properties for the drive, both of them show as a 'DVD/CDRom drives'.

Guess what i'm trying to say is if nero burns to it ok, its fine. Else, bit stumpted, try going into auto detect drives in bios? check cable plugged in properly?

An oddity i've noticed though, is that in the "recording" tab of the drives' properties, XP only seems to want to have a tick beside "enable cd recording on this drive" on one or the other of the drives, it's usually taking the tick off of the Ricoh but it once did it the other way around.

My problem is with Nero, I only have the Image Recorder, it does not display the NEC as a drive in the bottom right of the Nero screen.

I've installed and reinstalled Nero 3 times, rebooting after each install. Another thing that happens is that when I drag & drop a file onto the DVD drive, I get this error message: E:\ is not accessible - Incorrect function.

Did Nero come with this drive, or another old one? Some bundled versions of Nero will only work with certain drives.

What version of Nero? Nero 5.0 probably doesn't support your drive 🙂

Also, you can't drag to the drive unless you have packet writing software installed and the blank disc has been formatted for it (IIRC, I never use packet writing).

I think that solved the problem. I was able to burn a Data CD using a file from my hard drive. I tried to copy a music CD that I had previously burned using my external CD burner but got an error message. Also when it analyzed the disk, it showed it as copy righted which is not true but at least I know my DVD is install correctly and working properly.

Thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions...
