It'll cost a bundle at launch. I'd get the 2510a now its a super good deal. Then, by the time thats too slow for you you can get a newer drive for a resaonable price.

Don't be so sure about that. The 2510a came out just over $100 at release. I'd bet that it'll be under $150 at release. I might even upgrade my 2510a shortly after the 3500a is released. ;)

I still have not jumped in on the dvd-rw market and im thinking about taking the plunge. Im looking at the nec-2510A.

Ive been reading alot of posts and im not quite finding what i really want to know.

What is good media for these? Will 4x disks burn at 8x, or should you always stick with 8x?

Is there any benefit in using + or - ? What about burning xbox games?

What about getting the 2500A vs. 2510A, is the 10 worth an extra 20 bucks?

Thanks for the info!

I think one reason the 2510A was so cheap is because it's basically a 2500 with firmware update, so there's almost no extra mfr cost over the 2500 which they know how to make and are selling for quite cheap.

Great News! NEC is usually cheaper than Pioneer so let's hope this is under 130, plus it does everything the pioneer does with 48x cd-r burning! BTW I haven't really been paying attention much to the dvd market but will dual layer only be + or will there be dual layer - as well?

2nd gen DVD-DL burners before the media is even readily available? That's stupid.

You can get Verbatim DL discs in some stores ... with a retail price of $19.99 per disc. Pretty weak when a single 2.4X DL disc costs as much as 25 single layer 8X discs.

anyone have this drive? thinking of getting one.
main concern is that it burns ok on whatever media; bit slow is ok, finding out my backup is a coaster aint. bonus if its good with difficult backups, erm or something ;)

any other reccomendations for dvd blanks for the 3500a? Im looking for a 25pack or so of reasonably cheap disks mostly for data but also some dvdshrinked movie backups. prime consideration is no coasters, no good finding out a backup disk is a dud. i'd like it to be able to to 8x really, but can do 4x if 8x ones arent too reliable.

fwiw these are what i have to choose from. some i picked out:

Ritek Inkjet Printable DVD-r 4x (ritek G04 Dye) 25 Tub £8
Ridisc 4x DVD-r (ritek G04 Dye) In 25pk Tub £9
Datawrite Classic 8x DVD-R Grey (fuji Dye) 25pk £9 <- current choice
Bulkpaq DVD-r 8x Orange Top 25 Pack In Cake Box £9

Datawrite 8x Gold DVD+r (prodisc Dye) 25 Pk £10
Memorex DVD+r/4.7gb 8xspeed Printable Cakebox 25pack £9
