NEC 8x DVD burner or Lite-on 8x?

I'm thinking about buying one of the two. Both are similarly priced. Which is the better drive in your opinion?

I prefer the NEC but it does not support ITunes. Lite-On is well made Drive as well so the choice and Research is yours. My choice on the nexy one in that price range would be a1 NuTech BTA I've tried the other 2 😉

I've used Lite-on drives exclusively for the past few years (16x DVD, 52x CD-RW, 8x DVD+/-R). All 3 drives have read and/or burned every type and brand of media I've tried.

Another feature of some Lite-on DVD burners is the bitsetting feature. It allows you to format the different DVD media so that it is seen as a different media type. For example, I primarily use DVD+R media when backing up my movies, but my Apex DVD player doesn't like DVD+R media. I use Lite-on's bitsetting program and the DVD+R media is seen as DVD-ROM media once burned.

Not all the LO drives support this feature - you'll have to dig around to find out.

Which LiteOn are you talking about? The 811S or the 812S?

I personally have the NEC 2500A and so far it's doing its job admirably.

well, i pulled the trigger on the 8x+/- from newegg. It was 86 shipped. We'll see how it does 🙂

Sorry for the late reply.

I've got the 811S, but I think bitsetting is also supported by the 851 Lite-on as well. I'm not sure about the 812S, though.

I've heard that iTunes 4.5 (newest release) has fixed all the problems w/ the NEC burners

Trust me, I went crazy trying to get my 2500A working in iTunes, and ended up just buying a Lite-On DVD-Rom/CD-RW drive because i love iTunes so much 🙂

It is supported by the 851-S too.

If I remember correctly, the 812 supports bitsetting with a firmware update.

I would to Lite-On with all your CD/DVD needs. I've got a Lite-On CD burner and it works great - never had a single bad disc with it (and I've had it for a little over a year now with about 150+ CDs burned)

With client computers (I build computers for friends and family - but who on these forums doesn't?), I always go Lite-On as well. They've never experienced problems with their drives either.

Lite-On is simply the best bang for your buck IMO. I've never had to deal with their tech support or anything, so I don't know how good it is ... but isn't that a good thing?

nec.... even though i've heard the nec is just a rebadged lite-on ( i think the nec one just looks better anyways, haha )

AFAIK NEC makes their own drives. Some other drives like the TDK and I *think* the ASUS are rebadged NEC 2500As.
