well, is it?

and if it is not, are there any relatively cheap 8 bit panels in that size?

NEC 70GX2 = Bright 6-bit TN that dithers to 16.2M colors.

The 740BX is also a 6-bit TN, not as bright as the 70GX2. Even the 971P (PVA) is still 6-bit to my knowledge, but it is a lot higher contrast than either of the TNs, and has a better vertical viewing angle.

The 971P looks enticing. I wish there were English reviews on it. 5/5 stars on this French review: http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-228-1384-36.html

Here's one: http://www.overclockersonline.com/index.php?page=articles&num=581

Having read both of those reviews, they seemed to be really happy with the 971P. Based off those and the "face to face" test images on lesnumeriques I'm going to recommend it for "gaming with better color".

well the reason i think the 70gx2 is 6bit, is i have a 1770gx which was the panel before it (i think the only difference is slightly higher contrast ratio).

the big selling point of the 70gx2 and the 1770gx, is that its the glossy screen so it is very high contrast. i had an 8-bit panel before this, and honestly the 1770gx is nicer to look at (had a planar pl201 before). that said, i'm not super particular about colors.

im pretty sure planar makes some. 8bit panels tend to be larger now, just because 8bit is considered "premium".

samsung probably has them too, but they are usually not to heavily advertised because they do not have as low a "ms" rating which is what most n00b seem to care about when they buy monitors.
