NEC 6500A Burner

Just bought this burner for my laptop, using TDK DVD-R media and Nero but I seem to be able to burn only at 6X speed when its an 8X drive. Any ideas on how to solve this.. a firmware update? Cant seem to find the official firmware on NEC's site, has anyone tried the one from here - http://tdb.rpc1.org?
