NEC 5700A DVD-ROM, can't read DVD+RW

My NEC 5700A DVD-ROM (DELL OEM) originally had 3.07 firmware but I patched it to 3.43 in the hope that it would let me read DVD+RW but still no luck. This device is supposed to be able to read +RW. It reads +R with no problem though. Any 5700A owners here read +RW? Could you tell me what firmware level, what brand media, and what model burner made the disc?
