This drive sucks..
I've burned a bunch of DVDs with it and only now, months later, when I try to read it..I get CRC errors on some files..even data recovery things can't find it.

I put it in a different DVD-ROM drive and it can read the data just fine.
Any good DVD burners out there that have good read quality too?

I was looking at the LiteOn 20X burner at Newegg which is pretty cheap..but is the read and write quality that good?

You have to realize two things:

* There will always be /some/ media that your particular DVD writer doesn't like, and others with which the burn results are excellent.

* DVD is not a reliable media for data archives. If you have no other means, at least use DVD-RAM media.

Have burned about 300 DVD's with my 3550 and all read perfectly in it and every other set top DVD player I have. I do however exclusively use Verbatim DVD+R's. They can be found for not much more than really cheap media so why even bother ;)

I also have a 3550 that I've probably burned over 500 DVD's and CD's with. Never had a problem with it. I use Taiyo Yuden's mostly, but I have used some cheap CD's before with issue too.

What kind of DVDRs did you use... What firmware did you burn with... Is the drive a lemon? You have to consider all of these factors, because the 3550 is a very reliable burner.

This may not apply in your case, but they do wear out. I've also got a 3550A that I've had for about a year; have probably burned 250-300 DVD's. Unfortunately, it's not going to burn anymore - it no longer recognizes blank DVD media or burned DVD's. It still recognizes commercially produced DVD's just fine, and still burns CD's with no problem, but it's dead as a DVD burner.

A thorough cleaning didn't help, and I've discovered from other forums that this is a pretty common occurrence with NEC drives. They're great performers, but they do have a somewhat limited lifespan.

thanks for hte info guys

I use the latest firmware as of 1 month ago..
I burn about 1 DVD a month

the DVD's were burned on TaiyoYuden media...

the DVD burner is in a SFF chassis if that makes any difference (heat?)
