Nec 3550A DVD reading issues?

I am considering ditching my current fully functioning Lite-On SHW160P6S PS01, and have heard great things about the Nec 3550 on these forums. The reason I want to get rid of my current drive is that it doesn't read half of my DVD movie collection, and it's the wrong colour (they either don't care or screwed up RMA as I clearly wrote BLACK bezel in caps). I've tried multiple times and some unofficial software (remove check) to update the thing, but their great checking software won't execute the firmware flash. Probably cause they sent me back an OEM (every system ID software from Nero to PC Wizard to the label on the drive says it's this one).

So, a local store has a Nec 3550a OEM on clearance sale ($24), they only have 2 left so I want to jump on it quick. To anyone who owns it, does it have many issues reading DVDs (data or movie) or CDs? Is firmware upgrade process simple? How reliable is the thing?

Thanks for your input.

Yowza...forget it. In a 5 minute session at club cdfreaks, found nothing but problems with original DVD movies not reading on this drive.

same here but don't Newegg have the newer NEC version at not much more.

I have the 3540A dual layer 16x black burner; 2 as a matter of fact. I love them. They burn and read everything spot on every time. Great buy I must recommend to you.

I have two 3550A's, and neither has ever not read any disk I've ever tried in them, from movies to software (both on CD & DVD) to CD-R's and DVD-R's burned on other burners. And they're also very, very quiet, at least compared to most other optical drives, if that makes any difference to you (it makes none at all to me).

The good thing about this drive is it's a NEC. There is tons of firmware available and updating it is pretty painless. For $24, I would buy them both. I've had 5 NEC drives. I've never had one problem with any of them.
