NEC 3550 DVD Burner

Anyone else think this burner sucks? I've used NEC's in the past and they worked great for me. I picked one up right before they got real cheap too, i think paid almost $40, instead of the $30 deals now. This one will not burn cheap media for its life. The last pc burner i used was a Pioneer 110D and it burned great, it burned both cheap and good media. Did NEC's quality go down the drain or do i just have a defective burner?

Maybe it's a bad batch???? I have a couple of 3550's (and a Pioneer 110D) and they have been great. The only coasters I've made were ones where I screwed up.

burns everything fine for me. i do see that the burner deliberately burns at a slower speed than the disc is rated at...but thats because its to minimalize burning errors and can easily be turned off by flashing it or something.

I did some research, made sure i had the latest firmware and i did. I found out there's a firmware hack to upgrade to the 4551 drive. I finally found it and did the upgrade, the scans are way better for cheap -R media. Weird how its the same hardware and a firmware upgrade to a higher version drive can work out.
