NEC 3520A makes a poor slave

After finding out that the 3520A was a bit sluggish when it comes to ripping, I decided to put my Lite-On 166S DVD-ROM back in as the primary reader and slave the NEC. I had burned several DVDs with the NEC as a master, but as a slave to the 166S, it locks up every time. I have to reboot my system to even open the drive. Is anyone out there running a 3520 as a slave? If so, did you have to do anything special to get it to work properly?

interesting..
you sure your dvd-rom drive isnt slower (read speed) than the NEC?
If you put a slower drive in as the master, sometimes there are problems with the faster slave drive. In that case, you should just put it on as a master, or try a faster dvd-rom as a master.

I just happen to have my 3520A temporarily as Slave to a 36X CD burner. burned to CD's last night with no problems. Haven't tried to burn a DVD yet.
My guess is that you just have a bad drive. I would RMA it.

Note I'm not trying to burn disc-to-disc. I'm burning from the HD. The Lite-On is indeed faster than the NEC at reading discs, hence why I put it in the system.

I'm going to try making the drive a master tonight and see if the burn problems continue.

I have such issues with cd-rw drives.
Try switching it back to master (which you are doing tonight), and if there are no burn problems, then try getting a temporary faster DVD-Rom drive and test that as the master.
If you do get burn problems after u switch the NEC back to master, something most likely went wrong with the dvd burner during the original switch.

I use and older Lite-on 48x12x48 as my master and a NEC 2510a as my slave with no problems. The lite-on is MUCH faster at reading CD's and ripping them so thats why I used it as a master. I have never had any issues with the 100+ DVD's I have burned and the NEC has been the slave the entire time

I swapped the master/slave assignments (and recabled accordingly). I've burned 3 DVDs with no issues so far. Anyone else running a 3520a as a slave?

I'm already running the latest Liggy & Dee firmware 1.UF. It seems to be relatively popular, but my problem seems isolated.
