Hey guys, I just rencently bought a 100pk of 8x Taiyo Yudens. Their media code is TYG02. My system is an A64 3000+, 2x512MB of Mushkin PC3200, 460w Enermax PSU, DFI NF4 Ultra-D mobo, NEC 3520A, etc. using Nero 7.

I've been trying to burn some of these DVD-Rs, just full disc data backup. They burn successfully, but when I check them with Nero CD-DVD Speed, the Disc Quality says that I have anywhere from 6-7 millon pi errors, and usually around 50-100 thousand pi failures. I've gone through several discs, and am getting the same results. This looks bad to me, but I'm no media expert. I've verified that they have no issues playing back in three DVD drives in two systems in my room.

the Scandisc tab quotes around 15k Pi errors and only 350 Pi failures, with a 94% good rating. The end of the disc is completely bad, according to the scan, but files at the end of the disc read and play just fine during playback.

Thoughts?

you didnt say where you got TY media - there are known supplies with fake MID's
Rima.com and FujiFilm made in Japan are my only two known reliable TY
TY may not be the best for errors, depending on drive. but it is the best for longevity
anytime you overspeed (12X or 16X for 8X) you usually get mote errors.
A DVD burner has a learning curve - the more you do the better it gets.
the three best burners (NEC BenQ LG) usually burn best with +R
The Nec3520 has more third party firmware than any other drive

3.06 is the last 3520 FW out from NEC

94% disc scan is terrible - almost bad coating level
Did you drop Discs in bathtub - leave them on front seat of hot car?

curious as to your burst rate reading

If you really want to get into error graphs you will have to buy a Liteon DVD Burner as a read drive and use Kprobe 2.4.2

Buy some +R 8X Fuji MIJ and try them.
Or just buy another NEC - the 3550A

I bought them from shop4tech.com, and no, I'm not overspeeding. I'm burning them at 8x TYG02 is meant to burn at. I'm pretty sure they aren't fake. I have the latest 3.06 firmware, and I just got the stack of discs last night, so no...I have not physically abused them yet :)

There's the link to them.

Well, I grabbed a DVD that was 5-7 discs down into the pack. Scandisc gives it a 100% good rating, and Disc Quality rates it 80%, as opposed to me getting 94% scandisk ratings and 0% quality ratings. Maybe the top of my discs are bad/warped?

Are you using the NEC for your scan? Liggy and company say they are very poor scanners. I cannot attest to it, so just passing it along.

I am using the NEC for the scan. I do have a Lite-On that I can use to scan as well. For now, let me put up the NEC scans.

Lite-on says the scandisc results are 100% bad, and can't identify the media ID. It's an LOTC-4816 CD-RW/DVD Combo drive with the latest firmware. Yet, I'm playing data off the disc with the Lite-On with no issues. Rofl.

It didn't come in a cake box. The 100pk just came wrapped in plastic with that Value DVD-R sticker on the side.

My NEC's burst rate is 25MB/s.

What is Kprobe?

I asked for burstrate to make sure you were not in PIO mode

Kprobe is the quality scanner that everyone uses to check disc for errors.
I gave the explaining link above, so here it is again
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/178/3
But kprobe must be run on a Liteon DVD Brner - not DVD Player (unless patched)
So you burn a test disc on your dvd burner, then insert it in Liteon drive and run kprobe

Clearly you have a media issue
I have never seen TY packaged like that.
And it isnt "value" DVD
Like I said, just go to Best Buy and get a 30 or 50 box of Fujifilm MADE IN JAPAN ON THE LABEL +R or -R 8X

Edit:
heres what a TY factory 100 cakebox looks like

Sony MIJ are also TY's....and I have had the best results with the 25 packs that have "accucore" printed on the disc...they are usually 99 quality whereas the 50 packs usually give me 97-98

Didn't notice it, it was the last link you posted. I did read up on the previous ones, though. Unfortunately, I do not have a Lite-On burner, and don't really wish to go out and buy one just to run disc checks. But yes, you are right, there is something wrong with the media. My friend had some TDK TT02's and I used one. 100% scandisc rating, 98% quality rating. Much better than the 94%-100% scan rating and 0-80% quality rating I'm getting on mine. I'm going to try RMA'ing to shop4tech for replacement, and if the next batch doesn't work either, I'm just going to pick up a 50pk of TDK's and be done with it.

Thanks for the help!
