I understand these drives don't support bitsetting out of the box, but do after a firmware update. Has anyone tried the hacked firmware on this page? I also heard that NEC was supposed to officially release firmware that would support bitsetting but I haven't seen it. Thanks for your help.

Thanks

I'm debating whether or not to wait for the official firmware update (this page says May 1st) or use the Liggy and Dee one. How is it working for you?

I've burned almost as much as ribbon. If you set the booktype setting, it will play in virtually any dvd player. I'm not sure if the official NEC firmware will support booktype setting. You'd be better off going with the firmware I mentioned above.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot when my drive comes tomorrow  I can revert back to my old firmware if something goes wrong, right?

If you wanna go back to old f/w, back it up before you flash to the modified f/w. Ps. You can only bitset DVD+R media to DVD-ROM. And use Nero 6.6.

Can someone give me a quick rundown or link that explains what booksetting is? Read the thread posted above but it really doesn't explain what it is. Thanks.

Here's a link I found: Text
Basically, it fools the DVD player into thinking the DVD+R(W) is a DVD-ROM, which helps for compatibility because some players won't read DVD+Rs but will if the booktype is set to DVD-ROM.
