THe NEC 3500AG drive is an external drive in a USB2.0 enclosure. I keep getting this error with nero and even Alcohol 120%. I upgraded the firmware from 2.16 to 2.18.. dont know what is going on.

Try without the enclosure? Mine works fine with Ritek media. I'm using an unofficial modified 2.18 I believe.

I have it with the enclosure (usb 2.0) with it being on master jumper settings.. maybe that's the problem? I'll try it out and post back.

weird.. it clearly says its an A, not a AG on top of the drive...

I'm pretty sure they're the same thing. Mine said AG in the firmware as well, maybe that's the OEM label.

All I can think of to try is a different speed (try 2.4 or 4x) or a different write method (not DAO).

Also you could try this unofficial firmware that is supposed to have more compatibility with media, but obviously using unofficial firmware has its inherent risks. I'm using this one and I'm fine, though.

I will try this tonight and report back to you the results.

I downloaded and installed the firmware as suggested, but still to no avail.

After some research online, I found a better discussion forum about this.. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/102002

They suggested the following

1) Update USB 2.0 by finding your chipset from the motherboard and updating the drivers (no luck)
2) Use another USB device and see if that works (tried this with an external PCMCIA card I received and same error)
3) Disable IMAPI CD BURING SERVICE under Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Services . (no luck)
4) Disable DVD High Compatibility in Nero. (no work)
5) Do not click Finalize DVD when burning ISO.

The last option (#5) works and it seems like it burns. But halfway through it, it gets stuck and fails with the Reset occurred error!~~!

ARGH! I dont have a desktop PC at the moment, so I might just have to either 1) get a different usb 2.0 enclosure that doesn't use the API chipset or 2) Install it in my desktop, P2 @ 300mhz! OMFG!!

Well, looks like the external chipset was the problem. The bad chipset is ALI. I went Frys and bought myself another one and it worked instantly! 😛
