OK, I bought a spindle of 8x DVD+R Ritek media from newegg Link

I have a NEC 3500a, and am using Nero 6.3.1.20

When I go to burn, my only options are 2.4x or 4x... What am I doing wrong?

By the way, this is what DVD Identifier says about the media:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RITEK-R03-002]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc Type : [DVD+R]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Co.]
Media Type ID : [R03]
Product Revision : [002]
Disc Application Code : [General Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [1x , 2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4,482.6MB = 4.38GB (4.70GB)]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Also: How do I find out what firmware is on my drive, and where would I got to get newer firmware?

I'm having the same problem. I'm using 6.3.0.3 Ultra edition with 8x DVD+R Ritek media (from newegg same ones you got) and I only have the option of 2x or 4x

I didn't have to load any drivers either, XP pro just loaded it up fine. Any help would be appreicated. Thanks.

I've got the NEC 2500a, which is an 8x burner, and I cannot burn the media at 8x either. I think it is an incompatability with Nero, because I am able to burn at 8x if I use DVD Decrypter.

I have burnt a Dual layer disk with the latest ver of Nero and it worked fine. Your problem with the burn speed I should think is just down to the media, I dont think its a problem with nero but you could e-mail tech support and see what they say.

I have an older version of nero and I can't pick even 4x. Get a different program.

I am merely observing, but it seems a lot of supposed 8x or faster drives & media just don't work at the rated speed.

I also have some first-hand experience with it, as i tried some Kodak (later found out they were made by some garbage India company) 8x DVD+Rs with my 12x LG 4120.

I've decided to wait till i can get Maxell or Memorexs at 8x or faster for cheap, since it seems a whole lot of the 8x rated media doesn't work at 8x.

A lot of people seem to say that firmware needs to be updated. However, NEC doesn't offer firmware for their 3500a. Can anyone point to where the firmware can be downloaded as I have this same drive and media on order at newegg.. thanks!

I tried CyberLink Power Produce and it would only allow me to burn at 4x as well. Anyone else with the 3500a having this problem or is it the Ritek media??

Nobody here is trying to burn dual layer, just plain old 8x single layers...

I have another question. I burned a movie onto the Ritek media in question at 4x, and it played fine in my computer, but the Panasonic DVD Player in my living room didn't even recognize it. Have I just bought blanks that will never work in my standalone player, or will future firmware updates make them compatible with more players? Thanks.

Well, according to the media compatibility and writing strategies for the 3500's firmware DVD+R:RITEK-R03 only writes at 4x. Even with the latest hacked herrie firmwares, the Ritek R03's still write at 4x. Herrie will probably come out with speed hacks, but i dont know if it will fix the Ritek-R03 issues.

If you're really after speed, try:

merrimackjay, I've burned a few movies now, with Nero all at 4x with Ritek media and they work fine in my Magnavox DVD player. I also bought a 5 PK of Memorex DVD-RW's and they work fine as well. Might be your DVD player, you might want to pick up a pack of DVD-R's and give them a try, you might have better luck.

I have a Panasonic F87 DVD changer that reads DVD-R backups perfectly. Additionally, I found this:

http://www.panasonic.com/consu...meplayers.asp#feature1
"Multi-Format Playback
Our DVD players can play a variety of audio and video disc formats, including the following: DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-R1, video CD, audio CD, and CD-R/RW2, including MP33, WMA, and JPEG files. (Not all models can play all of the above formats. See individual model specs for details.)"

Notice no mention of +R... One other thing you could try is changing the "bitsetting" your burning software uses. I think that can sometimes help with compatibility issues.

You NEC dudes should check out hacked firmwares that allow 8x burns on 4x media - G04 for example.

Check out CDFreaks for cool firmware and for people/forums that know lots more about this than I do. I had a 2510 ($72) that is now recognized as a 2500 after I flashed a hacked firmware, who cares because it burns like a champ.

Woops, I meant I had a Toshiba DVD player, not Panasonic.

Anyway, I'll check out cdfreaks for hacked firmware.

I saw that posted but wanted to get some feedback first. So if you've installed it let me know how it works.
