NEC 2510 causing windows to crash

On my parents' Dell 4300, they need to burn a dvd of home movies. So I thought I would take my DVD burner and pop it in. No go. They have a LG 5700 DVD-ROM and a CD Burner in there already. Can't I just take out the DVD-ROM and pop mine in? Or do I have to uninstall the unit in Device Manager, and load some drivers. When I previously tried to install, the computer would not load Windows/sometimes even POST. I'm using XP Pro btw.
