NEC 20WMGX burn in anyone? Update!!!

Hi everyone. I just recieved my 20WMGX, and I seem to have a bit of a burn in problem.

After about 10 minutes of browsing I get a quite noticeable burn in of the top menu bar. It seems to happen to a lesser amount on the sides and bottom. Once the window is closed it goes away in about 10 minutes. The only made ajustment I've made is lowering the brightness to 50%.

I'm wondering if anyone has the same problem and how common it is. I can return the monitor, but if it's just the way it is.... I'll either get a refund or maybe just live with it.

Other than this problem it's a great monitor.

Yeah, a lot of people have the problem sadly enough.

Not sure what's going on. My unit doesn't show any signs of it after months of having roughly the same thing open at certain portions of the screen like Firefox (obviously turning it off here and there quite a bit). Seems that most people don't have the issue but there a few cases (at least five) of it. I would send it in for repair/exchange. The only way they'll know to fix it is if people complain and return.

no issues with burn in but then again I NEVER leave my monitor on when I'm not using my PC...that's just silly.

No burn in here. Although I've heard that turning the brightness down quite a bit can help prevent that - which is maybe why I don't have it. Brightness is 21% and my Contrast is 93%.

Its happened on all the IPS panels ive ever had. Must have made 5 replies on similar topics now. Just take it easy and try not to have windows in the same place open for long periods of time, minimize Firefox when your not using it. Also try to use light coloured Window borders (dark colours seem to be the culprit for image persistence).

95% of the time I turn it off when I'm not using it, as well. Supposedly this image persistence occurs after a very short period of having the same things displaying (5-10 minutes with "evaporation" time about the same).

I don't see any signs of it on the two IPS panels that I have access to.

burps, I don't know. Call NEC and see what they say, if they've even acknowledged the problem.

josh brings up a good point. This monitor is pretty bright.

I use brightness 25/contrast 50 with some calibrated settings.

Image retention is not only a problem on NEC IPS panels

Here is what Dell has to say about burn-in (image retention) for LCD panels:

1. What is Image Retention?

Image retention is a residual or ghost image that is viewable on the display and is more noticeable on light gray backgrounds.

The image retention is caused by leaving the flat panel monitor on with a static image (an image that does not move) to remain on the screen for an excessive amount of time (several hours).

2. Image Retention Prevention Options

Good - Set a dynamically changing screensaver to activate within 15 to 20 minutes of no activity. A screensaver will protect the screen from image retention, but it will not save energy.

Better - Enable the power save or power management mode on the computer to turn off the monitor when not in use within 15-20 minutes of inactivity. Turning on the power save mode will prevent image retention and extend the life of the display, and energy use drops by 99.5%.

Best - Turn off the flat panel when it is not being used. Turning off the display extends the life of the display, saves energy, and prevents image retention.

3. Solution

"Stuck" images can be removed by exercising the LCD pixels to bleed off the residual capacitive charge. This can most easily be accomplished by using a random pattern screen saver that changes the screen image repeatedly. The time required to clear the stuck image can vary widely (minutes, hours, days) depending on the panel technology and the severity of the stuck image.

NOTE: Turning the LCD monitor off for an extended period of time does not clear the image. The charge must be bled off by exercising the pixels with random images.

I don't have this problem and I get easily annoyed by things like this so I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it, my brightness is 50% and contrast 50% if thats any help.

I guess I got lucky since I have none of the problems that people commonly raise with this lcd like backlight bleed.

Burn in characteristics is a sure signs you have a defective panel.

Return it quick while still in window and before more goes wrong.

Just received my replacement. No burn in or image persistence.

Glad I returned it! It's a perfect monitor now!

Mine had very minimal burn in ... i wonder if i should try swapping it (but the warranty says it can send you a refurbished product instead :S)

Anyways, i set my monitor to turn off within a minute of no use so I do not get the effects as much.

I use msn and IE too much which causes it... its only barely noticeable in a semi dark grey background (if there is any burn in).


mr burps, did you RMA or return to where you got it from ?

There's a note in the box stating you should not return it to the dealer, but to NEC for service and repair. Reason being, you don't want someone else to have the same problem.
