NEC 1970GX LCD gaming 8ms with Opticlear!!

maddogatc, I did a quick search on pricenetwork just now, lowest price I see is $465 at Filtech Computer. I saw it's $472 at TD, but I refuse to do business with such shady dealers (see RFD forums). But I wonder what their return policy is, because I seem to have bad luck with dead pixels/defective LCD's. The $10 difference doesn't matter to me, and of course I wouldn't want to buy online (don't want to pay and wait for return shipping). But maybe at that price, it's worth it even if I can't return due to dead pixels .. why is it so much cheaper than other 8ms monitors? This Hyundai L90D+ seems to have built-in speakers and headphone jack too!
 
actually nevermind I just realized I can get the NEC and Samsung 9030B for the same price as the Hyundai (with my 20% off gift cards). hmm .. so if they are all the same price, it's a tough choice, really.
 
Just wanted you guys to know that I was looking at the NEC LCD1970GX (actually the 17" version with the same optibrite technology) at Fry's last night and it had a vertical line going from the top to the bottom of the screen! I asked the salesguy what that was and he said that those monitors get that frequently and many people are returning them because of that. Just wanted to warn you who are planning on buying one.

Well, at my work, we have never noticed that or had any customers complain of that, so i'm assuming that was an isolated issue.

We have had the usual complaints about dead pixels, but that's normal, since people don't realize that it's quite common.

I just got one of these babies
OMG this is my first LCD and I can NOT tell the difference from my old CRT other than it having a sharper image and about 3" bigger. Absolutely no ghosting or motion blur at all. The usb ports are very good for camera/mp3 connections or even usb drives.

I got one with 1 green dead pixel and they gladly exchanged it for me without any hassel. They even let me test the new before leaving to make sure it is dead pixel-less. This was at futureshop btw 🙂
 
are these the ones with the flat glass?
Man I want one of those with the flat glass... it brings the contrast to near CRT levels.
The colors are so much more vibrant like a trinitron screen with the flat glass.
 
yes this one is flat glass. I was looking at ones with only a glass surface because they are noticably sharper. Again, this LCD was equal or better than my 17" samsang 75E. I have enough space in front of my LCD to have "computer dinner" 😛
 
damn .. got my second NEC 1970GX today and it's got a deal pixel also. gRRRR ... why do I have such bad luck with dead pixels?? Does this monitor use Samsung LCD? I think Samsung really hates me. :-(
 
Its my understanding that the new version of the Viewsonic VP 191B uses this exact same kind of coating and if it does it is a far superior monitor.

(I may be wrong on the coating, I have read several places that it does)

Reason is its a true 16.7 Million color 8ms MVA panel that never surpasses 16ms on benchmarks. Now many claims of response time are not completly accurate and more about marketing but the VP191B was tested and literally never went over 16MS. This is HUGE improvement as it does much better than the L90D+ and many others.

Oh and did I mention its quite a bit cheaper than the NEC?

Now I again state I may be wrong, i cant find definat info on what Viewsonic calls this tech but it is my understanding that this monitor uses that tech and even if it doesnt if you look at the reviews of the new 191B (Not the old one) and compare them to the reviews of the 1970GX (There are several floating around including one by Cnet and one by PC World, Both rate the 1970GX rather low) then you will see the new VP191B supposedly far more impressive.

With all that said be careful if you decide to purchase that monitor as there are two versions out carrying the same name. Make sure you check out the newer one.

Edit: But considering the pricerange of the 1970GX it really is hard to choose it over the Dell 2005 FPW (20.1" wide Screen). Just read Anands review on the 2005FPW and you will see why it is considered, at least in this price range, about as good as you can get.
 
The thing is, for those of us in Canada we don't get as good as selection as you guys in the US. Yeah, so unlucky. So anyway, we don't get models like the VP191B in major retailers, ie. FutureShop, Staples, and BestBuy. They can only be purchased from smaller local shops, where the return policy isn't so great so even if you get 6 dead pixels you can't even exchange the darn thing until it meets the industry standard dead pixel requirement. So many of us prefer to buy from the large retailers and it so happens FutureShop carries this monitor still for $599.99. Also, you can buy 20% discounted gift cards (check RFD) so we actually pay less than local shops are selling for.

Just wish they would carry the new ViewSonic VX924 model .. hopefully they do by the time I return this NEC one. 🙂

I got a catalog from them a few days ago and they have the VX924 for $439.

If they ship to Canada that is. They also have the VP191B for $447.

Not sure Skiguy but I went through that same dilemma. I decided on the 2005 FPW as its more like comparing apples to oranges. The extra FOV and extra real estate plus the higher res of the 2005FPW made it no contest. Plus if you read Anands review on the 2005FPW its about the hands down winner as best overall monitor in this pricerange.
 
damn ... third one in a row with dead pixel. Are the odds like 90% with dead pixels? Heck I can't be that lucky ... I've never even won the lottery before ...
 
I have one of these monitors I bought last weekend...it looks great , but i think ill try to get one without a dead pixel, because it had one green pixel near the right center. How common is this on NEC LCD's to have a dead pixel? I'll just keep taking it back to Fry's until they give me one that doesnt have dead pixels or I'll get my money back.

Just a function of the res and size of the LCD.

That's why a 17" LCD has a such better dot pitch.
 
3 out of 3 of mine had dead pixels. So i'd say close to 100%. After the third, I finally returned it and got the Benq 937s. Glad I got it when I did because I was able to use 2 Staples coupons in store so it was less $50 and saved another 20% with my gift cards since i got it in store. That is on top of the $$ I got back from returning my monitor at futureshop (they didn't take away the $50 coupon i used, plus they gave me back cash so I made 20% of $700 or so!!!) Oh, and did I tell you the BenQ has no dead pixels and much sharper text than the NEC? (can adjust sharpness in the settings also). totally happy with my purchase! Eventhough the BenQ is uglier looking.
