Trying to decide between which of these monitors is better. Looking to buy an 18" and cannot decide which would be better. I have found the NEC 1855NX for around $529.00 and the DELL1800FP for around $539 directly from DEll.com. I also see that Tigerdirect has the Dell Recertified for $429.00, but with only a 1 month warranty. Is the NEC better than the DELL???

THANKS

I hear the Dell's are good (Samsung panel), but I can say that the NEC is very nice. It has some of the darkest blacks of any LCD ive seen. Also the NEC's are the panels used in Apples displays.

Stay far away from Tigerdirect (just check their ratings at resellerratings or the ratings thing here at AnandTech). I have not seen either LCD up close, but the NEC that I saw looked very nice to me. :)

Yep, not worth the risk for $100 to deal with a 1-month warranty. Also, with the rate the 1800FPs have been showing up with a few dead pixels, these refurbs are probably someone else's returns. 3 year warranty and product replacement for dead pixels is worth it IMO.

By the way, the 1800FP's are made by LG I believe. The 15, 17, and 19 are Sammies, and the 20 is BenQ.

I have an NEC 1860NX at work and three Dell 1800FPs at home. Let's just say that I would work from home if I could. The 1800FP just feels so much bigger and brighter than the NEC.

What do you think about the black levels between them?

No, Apple uses LG for many (all?) of their display panels.

I have the 1800FP and it's absolutely awesome. As for black, how can black be darker than black? Isn't black just the absence of light on LCDs? Greys, on the other hand, i've heard of people complaining. But i don't see anything wrong with that with the 1800FP either.

In a CRT, black is black. The absence of light. In an LCD, it is the reverse. There is light, and a current must be applied to a crystal (if I'm understanding correctly) to limit the amount of light that goes through it. Depending on the quality of the LCD (among other things, I assume), more or less of the light might be filtered out when a "black" pixel is supposed to be shown.

I think it has to do with the size of the display. I think the larger displays are LG and the smaller ones are NEC....it may be vice versa though. :shrugg:

Yes I can confirm that the 1800FP is an LG because I have already had mine apart for inspection.

The 20 is integrated by BenQ but the panel is LG.

I didn't get to reply to the black vs. black question until now. Been a lil busy with an nForce2 mobo. :)

Since I don't have each model side-by-side, I have to do this from memory. The black on the NEC (right in front of me at the moment) looks great. I know my 1800FPs are bright as hell, so I don't think black comes out as well on them. But, the 1800FPs have that nice glow about them. It must be that "I-only-paid$383+tax-each" glow.

if these(1800fp) are LG's, I know what brand I'll be buying next time! I have had mine since Tuesday- I am in love with it- just got done dialing up the resoultution in RTCW, and UT2K3, to match the monitor, and frankly I am amazed at the depth and colors. And, I am using a Radeon 8500 LE, so it's not like I am using a $400 card. Couldn't be happier.

too bad you didn't see the hot deal for the 1800FP a week or two ago for $380 + tax from dell or this would have been a easy decision ;)

btw, I'm loving my 1800FP :)

Yeah, I'm still around. I don't think you'll really go wrong with either display. The blacks are much more "true" on the NEC, but I don't think that I'll ever give up my bright 1800FPs. I just got a dual-DVI GF4 Ti4600 card yesterday, so I am really loving life. I'll really be on Cloud 9 once I put a second CPU in my home workstation again.

That reminds me, time to update my "AT rigs" page.

by the way, i prefer the 1800FP, cuz usually you can get a great deal on it, i ended up paying under 400 for it.
