I just bought myself one of these about a week ago.

Now, if only DL media weren't so expensive (i.e., you could get a 10 pack for less than the cost of the drive), that would be great. :p

Oh, and even though it says "sale ends 4pm PST", I wouldn't necessarily pay attention to that - it's been hovering right around $70-$72 for the last two weeks or so, from what I've seen. :)

I wouldnt go so far as to calling them retarded but those "daily deals" really are a joke. They need to just come clean and say .50-$5 off these select items, today only!

Dont bother with .01 cent deals because it really is insulting to us deal hunters.

I bought one of these last week for $71 +$5 shipping at the Egg then another a few days ago for $74 +$5 shipping. What gives? I couldn't get it for $70. Oh well.

Asfar as i am concerned, Newegg rocks. Their prices are usually the cheapest around and they ship lightning fast! There 1 day sales seem kinda crappy but if u think about it, they don't have much profit to work with on these items. I'll take the extra couple percentage points off and discounted or free shipping :)

not a bad deal on that 3500a....
...must.... hold.... back.....

Or for $1.01 more, you can get this one if you need some sort of burning software.

what kind of software does it come with? i can't seem to find the info in the link.

I guess it's your choice to not shop their anymore, but this is a good price on one of the best optical drives available. If Newegg's biggest flaw is that their "sale" price is not different then their "normal" price, I can live with that. Their competitive pricing, fast shipping, and reliable product quality (other online stores sell refurb's as new, etc.) far outweigh their "fake" sale prices. If you want to experience true BS while shopping for electronics, go to Best Buy, tigerdirect, buy.com, etc. OP, good post of a hot deal, even if this has been the going price for awhile, I'm sure someone on Ananadtech benefitted from your post.

i bought the sony 17" LCD they had on sale yesterday, normal price was 355 and they had it on the one day sale for 330. it just depends on the item and how much they can take off.

I bought mine eleven days ago. It was $71 + $4 shipping.

The drive is still sitting on my desk waiting to be installed. I would have waited eleven days to save five bucks ('cause I'm cheap like that).

They changed the shipping on the beige one though - it was $73+4, now it's just $70, don't think it was just $70 for the last two weeks at all.

The prices on this drive do fluctuate though - and it is annoying that the silver version has higher shipping, instead of a higher price - same drive, same weight, shipping should be the same!

Please keep in mind that I am a DVD Burning n00b :)

1) What's the difference between Dual Layer and non-Dual Layer? I just want to backup computer files and archive some movies. Why do I want or need Dual Layer? What's the difference?

2) I'll probably use this as an external DVD Burner, is that a good or bad idea?

3) Any recommendations on under $40 external enclosures from NewEgg.com?
Would I need 5.25" or 3.5"?
I'd like a combo USB/FireWire with Cypress/Oxford 911 chipsets.

Thanks in advance.

1) Dual Layer discs have two separate recording layers, for 2x the space (8.5gb or so, I think) on a one-sided disc. However, they're so hideously expensive right now ($10 per disc) that it's not even worth bothering with right now. Not to mention, the burning speeds are slower for DL discs. If you want to make a 1:1 backup of some movies though, you'll most likely need a DL disc, since most commercial DVD's are dual-layer, as far as I'm aware. Or, you could use something like DVD Shrink, but I don't have much experience with that so I couldn't really tell you how good it is. For data backup, the 4.4gb of a single layer disc should be fine in most cases.

2) Don't have experience with that...so not sure.
3) Same (although I would guess 5.25"?)

Hope that was some help, at least....:p

I'm trying to talk myself out of it. I think the DL media at $10 each pretty much kills this for me.

When DVD Burners 24x are $50 with media at $0.50 each, then I'll jump in with both feet :)

Do you really need to have DL media RIGHT NOW?

I bought in because 4.XMB is enough disk for my backups, and I don't really plan to use the drive to "back up" movies. If I do want to back up movies, I can shrink them onto a non-DL disk... and it'll be nice to have this DL drive in the future (when DL media is $0.50) even if it is slow when the future gets here.

I also bought a 100-disk cake box of non-DL media for $20 AR when I bought the drive, and Newegg threw in five free DL disks (the five free disk offer is still going on).
