also, that Easy Media Creator Basic Software is crap... isn't worth the 5 bucks IMHO.... I'll stick w/ my 4 year old nero key i've been using since I bought my first burner until i need DL support

I got in yesterday. Lucky because I was looking for the black faceplate too. Too bad there is tax in NJ.

That's what I thought...thanks for confirming though. I guess I'll get another burner then.

I wasn't having any problems. I just like to have firmware up-to-date on my drives.

Link to download 2.18 firmware
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/firmware/1139

Before you flash it, the .exe updater will say what current firmware you are using.

One memeber of cdfreaks has collected most all of the available firmware versions and is hosting what he has right here.

Also, if you would like to dump your curent firmware to disk before you flash, check out
An Idiot's Guide to backing up your firmware in Windows XP Pro. I actually don't plan to bother bc most any revision is out there to grab. This drive is getting a real lot of attention from tweaks.

Also, check out cdrinfo's NEC 3500 and OEM official firmware overview. I found it quite informative. There are a lot of official and non-official versions of firmware for the 3500A. Each rebadged model has it's own version, as well as the NEC's OEM model. Plus, NEC apparently is doing "blind updates." As I understand it, this means that any two different drives may have different firmware revisions even though the same revision number may be indicated. It all gets a little confusing.

I spent a lot of time on Sunday, right after I placed my order doing the research. Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I have already decided to go with TDK 1616n v2.8 SE.

Have fun.
