Anyone have any informed opinions as to which is a better dvd burner? I'm leaning toward the NEC because of the hacked BIOS' that are available for it to burn just about any media... Anyone know any reasons why one of these might be better than the other..?

Pioneer gets my vote, mainly because I own the previous 105, which has been flawless.

Edit: Pioneer's also have a hacked bios, im using it myself.

What -R and +R media are you guys using on the Pioneer? I plan to use this probably 95% of the time with recordable, and not rewritable, media. Do you ever run into problems with burning a FULL disc (in other words, data all the way to the outer edge).. do you ever get discs that are unreadable above 4.2Gb or so...?

[edit: yes, i meant hacked firmware, not bios...]

If you have spare time, you can read Tom's Review
The review/results seem to lean more towards the Pioneer.
I'm just waiting until summer to buy one 'cuz I still think that media costs too much.

Same drive... one is OEM, one is retail...

CPU Magazine tested both drives, and the results went the other way, leaning towards the NEC drive.... I don't think you can go wrong with either drive.... I have both, but haven't used the Pioneer yet....

having read every single review and forum post I can find about dvd writers, the one that people are consistently wild about is the pioneer - both the a05 and the a06. No other drive has this much love!

I have the Pioneer DVR106 and I've had no problems burning to the edges on Memorex (Ricoh) +R medias and Ritek -R medias and they all play fine on my DVD player. I believe that when the DVD can't be read past 4GB, it's more a function of crappy media rather than the burner.

Brother has the NEC 1300A, it is a bit picky on what media it will burn but this is usually fixed with a firmware update. Had no problems last weekend when I used it to back up some stuff off my Harddrive.
