Neatest thing about a DVD +R/RW Drive!

I bought a Ricoh 2.4x DVD +R/RW drive this last week.

A DVD at 4.7 gig can be burned in about 20 minutes, about the same speed in comparrison as a 16x CDRW, not to shabby.
But what is the neatest thing about it?

Well, I frequently get new hardware, so I install my OS more frequently than most people.
I just made a bootable DVD that has all the files I need on it, EVERYTHING.
XP, SP1 servace pack, Office 2000 , all my drivers.
3D mark 2001SE
EVERYTHING LOL
And I was able to make the XP install an unattended install 🙂
Damn that rocks!

that's cool as hell, hey how would someone know what dvd burner to choose at this point in the game?

I thought hell was hot. Anyway, sony just came out with a burner that very affordable priced and it supports both DVD-RW and DVD+RW

I'm going to hold off on a DVD writer until one standard or the other becomes "the standard." When that time comes, the prices of the media will drop significantly. In addition, that waiting time will give DVD drives time to drop in price. They are definitely getting more affordable, but I still don't want to be stuck with a drive that uses an unsupported standard.

The Sony DRU500A supports both formats. So there's no way you'd get stuck with a drive that you couldn't buy media for. I'm going to pick up a Sony burner in the near future if the reviews say it's a solid drive.

About buying a drive.
I looked pretty hard at all that was available.
At $265 I didn't think that I would lose much of any investment if it changed.

The "+" drives used to be only RW format. Now that you can write (+R) and close the DVD, the whole ball game changes.
The +R disks can virtually be read in any dvd drive as well as any DVD tabletop player that reads CDR/RW.
Just imagine a single DVD with 4.7 gb of mp3s!!!
What we need now is a really good 5.1 dts mp3 codec 😉

The one thing that will change over time however is the capacity of the disks.
I'm sure that 9 gb DVD +R/RW's will be on the way sooner or later.

I have the Sony DRU-120a DVD+R/+RW drive and it works very well. I too created an image of my HD at different stages.

1) Std WinXP installation
2) Std WinXP installation with SP1
3) Std WinXP installation with SP1 and all my apps, such as Office 2002, Photoshop etc etc.

And stored them all on one CD. 😀

I also created my first "Backup" DVD movie last night. The DVD+RW disk I used worked in my Pioneer 105 DVD Rom drive and my Stand alone Sony DVD Player...No problems at all.

I would however like to know when DVD9 media will be readily available....or can you get it now? I'm sure I've seen it advertised! :frown: Isn't DVD9 dual layer or something like that, therefore current DVD writers will only read not write! 🙁

And stored them all on one CD.

*CRACK* we have to break you lucky people away from saying CD. Don't you mean DVD? Maybe it would be easier for all of us if we all just said "disc"

What's even cooler is uploading your 20GB hd image to a server and pulling it down whenever you'd like. And it's all done by booting off a NIC. No media needed. 😀

zephyrprime,
I'm not a addict to any particular platform.
I've used an Nforce board, VIA, Intel to VIA again then back to Intel in just the last 8 months.
Did you know that if you use an NForce board and try to install with a VIA board with out redoing the system it won't go into windows?

I've just found it much better after exchaning chipsets to just start from scratch, afterall it's easy enough.
I can do it in about an hour.

Lucky for all of us, there several different sources to help with those two questions 🙂

How to make a XP Bootable cd-rom using Nero
The directions are clear and easy to follow.

MS already has the unattended install as a part of it's feature set.

Windows XP Unattended Installation
This works for Win2000, XP Home and XP Pro.

Lot's of fun there and great reading. Both of thses links are very well done.

Now if I was just good enough to get the drivers for my sound and video to install auto, I wouldn't have to do anything at all 🙂

well, i know how to make a bootable cd... i guess i should revise my question to: nero will burn a 4GB iso to dvd and it will boot? or maybe it has dvd bootable settings? thanks for the link on the unattented xp install too 🙂

Why not ghost your entire drive, & make a self booting CD that restores your HD image unattended...

That sounds even better to me!

Of course I have two servers available on my network, I could ghost it over the network...

But lots of people don't have that option available.
