Got an old Dell given to me for free... 1.2Ghz, 128 Meg RAM... but the thing doesnt even have a CD-ROM or disk drive in it... just a Small Form Factor desktop unit... 20 gig drive... nothing fancy...

Anyway, I ripped it apart, installed a CD-ROM and put WinXP SP2 on... now I dont know what to do with it... dont really need an extra computer around... Was thinking of turning it into a small project server or something just to muck around with..

Was thinking of putting linux on it or something, but not really sure... Any cool ideas or anything that I could use this machine for ? I'm open to anything except shipping it to someone for free... hahaha 🙂

BTW : Dont mind spelling, grammar, I know I suck... Thanks!

i'd buy a bigger hard drive + tv capture card, install linux, install myth tv, and use it as a DVR. I have been dying to get one going but my processor in my spare computer isn't up to the specs to do a decent job.

Already have my XBOX setup as a media center though... so, dont really need another... and dont watch TV at all so no need for a DVR...

This thing really IS useless... hahaha 🙂

Just use it as a backup/file/web server. It is nice to have somewhere to put your important information, it is even better to have two places to put it. If you got it for free, just set it up and put it in a closet somewhere. You really don't need a monitor, mouse, or keyboard, just a network connection and do all of the work on it over Remote Desktop.

I agree with hevnsnt, install Linux on it for a while and play around with it. After you're thoroughly bored of that, turn it into a HTPC.
