I have seen that as something like:

Candidate, A.A., Computer Science, 2011.

This guy graduated high school in 97....I think he's had time to do more than nearly complete an Associates.

On the plus side he lists "Reading Automotive Magazines and Throwning the baseball round with his son" as two of his hobbies.

I need to have a conversation with HR about how this one got through the system to me.

The degree thing is dumb, but what's wrong with this? Why do you ask about hobbies if you just want to belittle them?

Sounds like a cool guy to me. You don't want someone too ambitious working for you, they'll just be a pain in the ass. Hes right in that meaty part of the curve.

In general, is it a bad thing to put any hobbies on a resume, in your opinion?

MotionMan

Depends on the position, I suppose. I would only list them if asked to, and then only if I had interesting and challenging ones which put me in a good light to list, neither of which this applicant had.

The good thing about having hobbies on there is it can be an ice breaker during the interview. But it has to interesting or impressive. No one gives a shit that this guy reads car mags or throwns the ball around.

Depending on the situation, I.E. somebody who is currently in school and near graduation, I could see it being perhaps ok. Maybe not though.

That said, if he graduated in 1990's and still doesn't have an associates degree then he shouldn't list it. Oh and spell check your resume...

I put dog training/dog obedience down on mine and it ended up being the 2nd thing we talked about. I think it can be a good conversation starter as long as you don't put down something stupid (and I'm not sure "reading auto magazines" says anything about a person other than they like cars and they like to read magazines)

Most of the time, the smart ones just leave off a finish/graduation date. Are they hiding their age, or did they never finish, who knows!

I'm not sure reading magazines constitutes a hobby, regardless of what kind of magazines they are.
