i just installed windows xp pro, i have only put on aol instant messenger, mirc, gigabyte utility manager, and gigabyte managment tool. i have a p4 2.26, 512 megs ddr ram, 120 gig wd hard drive, no sound card right now ((audigy is taking forever to ship)), using the onboard lan, and a gainward geforce4 ti4200. the problem is that as my computer stays on longer, right nwo it's been on for about 2 hours, it starts to work it's way up to 100% cpu usage after about 4 hours. right now it is going between 40 --70% usage with only windows task manager and this ie expolorer window open. when i click over to processes, it tells me that svchost.exe LOCAL SERVICE is the program that is creating all of the usage. i'm not sure what was cuasing this, what i would really like to allow my cpu usage to be around 0 -- a few percent when it's idle. i have taken screen shots of both processes and performance for you to see what is running, thank you.

although i didn't solve the problem, i did find a way to restart it. if you kill the process, it immediatly responds, but starts back out at 0. does this mean anything?

I've had that happen before, and when I killed it permenantly (prevent it from starting up under msconfig) it makes you not be able to print...

do you by chance have a visioneer USB scanner? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q303777&

Also, svchost.exe pretty much is a generic name that is given to services running from dll's... problem is that it IS a generic name so finding the actual DLL could be difficult. You can try killing the service and see what stops working. My guess it that it is a screwy printer, scanner, camera, or similar device. Once you can narrow it down, replace the drivers of the misbehaving device, sometimes older drivers offer less functionality, but are more stable.

You can also try starting the system with a device removed.... Remove only one device at a time (per boot) and see if it works better.

good luck

no printer installed yet, or camera or even a scanner. tomorrow i'm installing an hp laserjet 1000 and a logitech quick cam pro 3000, and hopefully my audigy if it comes in, so blah, looks like more problems are on the way. it works if i just kill the process once, it responds, but is ok. maybe i'll just have to keep doing that? that's a pain in the butt though. do you think those devices above will create more problems? they should have pretty good drivers, they are pretty common components.

You might try running MSCONFIG (Start/Run/MSCONFIG) and select "Diagnostic Startup--load basic devices and services only". Click Apply then OK to reboot. You can always change back but see what happens when you do this. If the CPU usage goes away then you can start doing a selective startup of each item to see when the "problem" comes back. It might take a while but should work.

the program was in my gmt.exe program. i'm not sure what it even did, but it was called the gigabyte managment tool. i just killed it and then disabled it on startup and instantly my cpu usage was back to normal. awesome. now cpu temp at 29 C. haha, witht hat 100% usage all the time, my temps were heating up the room. happy to get this problem solved!
