near sighted in one eye?

I have always had good vision, never had a problem reading small text from far distances or anything like that.. but today I noticed that when I close my right eye and try to read text with only my left, it is blurry and kind of goes in and out of focus but gets better when I move closer, everything is normal with my right eye. Has anyone ever experienced this? could it just be something temporary? I didn't poke my eye or anything, it doesn't hurt and i'm not getting any headaches or anything from it.

It's possible, but AFAIK, it's uncommon for one eye to be perfect with the other completely off.

BTW, my eyes are a bit uneven, but both need correction.

i use to think i had perfect vision too, well i did untill i went a month ago for eye exam
apparantly i have 20/20 vision in my left eye and 20/25 in my right
the prescription for my right eye was .75 which apparantly does not warrant getting glasses - so for all intents and purposes my vision is fine

you should get an exam if you havent done so for awhile, we are all making ourselves myopic from sitting here in front of the computer and reading close - im a student i cant help that - anyway moral is get an exam, your insurance should cover it or your school's will

there may be some options to prevent your eyesight from getting worse

btw im exactly like you, i have no trouble seeing or with headaches but i cant focus with my right eye alone

lol @ avatars.. good choice hah

The funny thing is, this just happened today. Maybe I just need some sleep.

oh, and I have never had an eye exam in my life. Only when I got my license 4 years ago, and I doubt that is very extensive

Yes, I have the exact same problem, although I think my right eye may be starting to slip too 🙁 But, practically everyone else in my family has glasses, so I guess it's bound to happen.

It's normal for people to have a dominant eye. Most people's eyes are (at least) slightly different powers. From what you're describing, it might be worth having checked out b/c if there is enough difference, your dominant eye will take over and your other eye will keep getting worse.

Edit: Don't panic or anything, if you just noticed it, it could just be fatigue or something like that

its not extensive at all but it'll definitely give you the info you need

you should definitely get an exam, it was 4 years before i got mine too and I had absolutely no problems then

you should never give just a passing thought to your health, but if this is just a one day thing then theres no reason to worry

Thanks for the info, I think I will schedule an exam and have the old eyes checked.. hope they don't make me wear an eye patch or anything lol. I have been looking for an excuse to get an LCD for a while now too 🙂

Ok, it's perfectly normal. yes, I repeat, perfectly normal. A lot of people experience this, too.
You can have one eye with minus power <= -1.00. The other eye can be either normal or far-sighted <=+1.00
In both cases, you will see everything fine. there's no need to wear glasses. Your right eye may not be perfect as you have been thinking. It may be far-sighted with +0.50 or +0.75, which is very hard to tell unless you take an eye exam (a real one, the one that cost money, not the one that they just tell you to look at the letters and read it!).
If you have one eye that is near-sighted, the other is normal. You may need glasses in 2-3 years when the near-sighted one gets worse. The second case is pretty interesting, wearing glasses will make it worse than normal. That has happened to a lot of people.

Cliff notes: Yes, it is normal. You dont need glasses if you see everything fine with both eyes
