ne1 know about changing WinXP ACPI confiqurations ?

Still in my search to find answer to "Infinite Loop error", I believe I may have found my answer. But not sure how to fix it.
I have a dual boot right now of XP (drive C🙂 and Win98 (drive D🙂
Everything works in XP except anything 3d (games, screensavers,....)
Everything works in 98 fine.
So, I went looking for the difference between the two. My findings -

WinXP: ACPI Uniprocessor PC : Use for a ACPI multiple-processor board but with a single processor installed

Win98: Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC : Use for a single processor motherboard with single processor.

I'm thinking the shop I bought the computer from has installed XP wrong. I've found that you don't see all the choices during install, but need to scroll up/down using the arrow keys. From what I've read, you only see 2-3 choices of the possible 6-8 choices (guess on my on my part as to how many there are).
I know for Fact, this Asus P4S333 only has one slot for a CPU, and the discription I find for "Uniprocessor PC" is not correct in my case.

Now, can this be changed to be the same as Win98 is without reinstall of XP. I would like like to avoid reinstalling the OS and all my proggys. And, does this sound like it would be the cause of my infinite loop error.

thx for any info.

Nope.

The HAL in use is correct. You need the ACPI Uniprocessor PC HAL installed in order to use the IO-APIC which allows hardware IRQs above 16 on Pentium 4 based systems.

Please read the FAQ: ACPI vs APM

thx for the acpi faq here. But, I'm confused as to how you say this is correct setting for me. Here are the options I've found so far:
____________________________________________________________________________________
ACPI Multiprocessor PC : Use for a multiple-processor ACPI computer

ACPI Uniprocessor PC : Use for a ACPI multiple-processor board but with a single processor installed

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC : Use for a single processor motherboard with single processor.

Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible : Use for a Compaq Systempro computer

MPS Uniprocessor PC : Use on non-ACPI computers dual processor motherboard with a single processor installed

MPS Multiprocessor PC : Non-ACPI computers with a dual processor running

Standard PC : Any Standard PC, non-ACPI, or non-MPS. Could be a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium II, or Pentium III

The "Uniprocessor PC" that my install of XP is using is "ACPI" but says it's for a M/B with two CPU's with only one in use.

When I installed Win98 on my 2nd hard drive, it installed "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface ACPI" (doesn't this mean 98 is also using ACPI)

Now both seem to be using "ACPI", can you explain how it's using the correct one ? Because reading the distription of each, the one I have installed for XP just sounds wrong.

AndyHui, (or anyone) can you tell why u say "The HAL in use is correct"
I finally found the list on Microsofts site Here
From how I'm reading this, mine is not installed correctly.

Can anyone with a Single Processor Motherboard tell what there computer is listed as under Device manager with WinXP.

Im running Win Xp, Athlon XP 1900+, Soyo Dragon and my Device Manager Shows "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)PC" I hope this helps. Thanks for the link to MS support. Good article.

Your HAL is correct!

Pentium 4 systems have a IO-APIC controller. This allows the system to use IRQs above 16. IO-APIC functionality is ONLY provided in the ACPI Uniprocessor PC HAL. This is why XP defaults to the ACPI Uniprocessor HAL during install.

Socket A systems (Athlon) do not have a IO-APIC controller and thus use the standard ACPI HAL.

thx for the responces, but, too late 🙁

I've made a mess and trying to fix with system restore.

Now, before I messed with ACPI, I happened to check Leadtek, and whoo wee, new drivers. Download and Install (very bad).
I then got the error "Failed to Load DLL - NVQTWK" upon reboot. Searching this on the net, best I found was it's something to do with nVidia drivers putting a file into the XP startup (RUN32.exe) or something close to that.
Ok, more tinkering, don't recall everything I did, but then upon reboot I got some error I've never seen before. And this mofo don't go away, says something like "XP experienced a bad system recovery" and the good'ol "Click OK" is only option. Doing this just makes pop up again and again, it doesn't go away. 2 or 3 different "restore points" to get rid of this error.
So, then I said phuk it, lets go and make my PC "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface ACPI" (what more harm can I do), well, this is some phuked up sh!t, files and folders have DISSPEARED !
I had (well still have some of it) a folder "Downloads", in it, stuff like, (nvidia drivers, NVmax, Wolfman demo, and more I can't recall, ALL GONE. The folder Downloads is still there, but much of it's sub folders and contents are GONE.
Now, some of u are gonna say, it's from restore point, no, there were nvidia display drivers in there dating back to when I got this puter in May through till now. All gone.

Well, I've just completed D/L of Wolfman demo from nVidia again, gonna test what I've done.

msg to the Forum, don't do dis sh!t while drinking "Brown Pop"

brown pop = beer :/

ok, update here:

1st thing I wanted to try was nVidia's "Wofman" demo. Previously this would crash and cause infinite loop error within 10 seconds - 30 seconds.

I just let it run for about 5 minutes, and no crash 🙂 Even got to play with the menu (light, walk, points, solid,....) just pointing at the memu before was Instant crash.
By changing to "Advanced ...... ACPI", I don't know if I've lost anything (feature wise) but it's stable. To tried now, but tomorrow I'll test Quake3 for opengl and Serious Sam D3D and see how it goes. And burn a cd.....,

Now, I would like to say, what started my problems was the new Leadtek drivers, maybe it was me not removing all items properly (i.e. the startup thingy), as system restore has brought me back to drivers I was using just yesterday.
But the change from "Uniprocessor ACPI" to "Advanced Config and Power Interface ACPI" was flawless. Just updated driver, reboot, and now hardware accel seems to be ok.

If I'm stable for the next few days, I'll post this info everywhere, in hopes 1 less person has to go through this major p!ss off "infinite loop".
