On my job they are outsourcing the whole dept that I work in. EDS has the contract so as of Feb 1st '03, we will all be EDS employees.

How is EDS to work for ? We are all glad that they are bringing us over, for the time being at least and not replacing us. They said that we jave a year at least.

I have a friend who's worked for them for years at our local WorldCom office.

If he was working for WorldCom instead of EDS, he'd be out of a job. With that in mind, it can't be that bad :)

Part of the outsourcing contract that is pretty standard with EDS makes them keep all of the employees of the company they're outsourcing. At least for a year.

Its not a bad company to work for, however, they aren't great. Over the past year, they've completely demolished the team I worked with and most of the area I worked in. I was laid off almost a year ago :\

But I was just a peon, no one important. Keep that in mind when they bring the chopping block to your group.

Electronic Data Systems (EDS) laid off 300 workers just one day after it would have had to pay a severance package it promised in the purchase agreement for Sabre.

EDS representatives point out the company laid off 1,700 workers not with Sabre and that the timing was not a factor. However, Sabre workers - who now will only get two to four weeks salary as a severance package ? would have received a month?s salary pluse as much as month?s pay for each year served. So, someone with the company for nine years went from being owned $68,000 to $3,000. All the employees laid off were told that medical coverage would end at midnight ? causing rushed trips to the pharmacy. A federal law known as Cobra allows workers to continue their policies for up to 18 months, but only by paying the full premiums.

Here and here. Good luck to you.

Interesting Site.

FWIW, I have no first hand experience with working for EDS.

I had a former co-worker who used to work for EDS. I didn't hear him say many overly positive things.

But then again, he was one of those types that was always trying to find something wrong. He would spend an entire day pouring over our 401k outlays to ensure that the company wasn't screwing us over. That was a good thing because he did find some errors but his point of reference was always that the company he was working for was trying to screw him over.

Thanks for the input. I have a sinking feeling that this is a move to trim all the fat off this area, and won't be suprised if many ppl are let go after the year is up. I feel badly b/c I just got hired by this company after 6 months of working for them as a contractor. They have a pretty generous benefits package that I will be giving up now, but I should really be gratefull that I am still gainfully employed for the time being. Ah well, whaddya gonna do?

A lot can happen in a year. Brush up on your skills, work hard, maybe get some certifications. Even if you do get laid off you'll have a better chance of getting a new job, and if they keep you it'll only make you that much more valuable to them. Hopefully the economy picks back up this year.

I'd say shop around now, but, manytimes folks are given incentives to stay on board (a bonus that you keep unless you quite w/in a certain time) with the new company. So, I'd start shopping around when that incentive expires.

I've worked for EDS on their NMCI (Navy Marine Corps Intranet) contract. It was a huge mess and they screwed alot of things up. But that's a long story.
