My eyes are constantly strained when looking at this monitor. I've tried adjusting the contrast & brightness to different levels, as well as changed the refresh rates, but my eyes keep straining to read text. There's something about this monitor that doesn't seem right. It uses the SONY Trinitron tube, so it should be a pretty good monitor. Anyone have similar problems???

What res/refresh rate is it at? Trinitron monitors tend to be very bright, the best settings would be having the contrast at 100(or highest), and then just adjust the brightness to a comfortable level, usually around 30 would be fine because they're really bright.

The res is 1024*768, refresh = 85 Hz. I did as you said in your post, and it doesn't seem to change much. This is the 2nd AV7TF I've tried and both are the same. It just seems to be so difficult to read text. Something's weird with this monitor. Thanks for the info anyways. Any other suggestions???

Do you have an Nvidia card, they tend to have below average text clarity.

Yes I do, the Hercules 3D Prophet II MX. The thing is that on my older LG Studioworks 57i, I never had this problem. Even using the Nvidia card.

Thats strange, the only other thing I can think of is getting the right monitor drivers.

I downloaded the drivers for the AV7TF as soon as I plugged it onto my PC. Right now' I've got the contrast at 100%, brightness at 30%, and also some color tweaks in the Hercules MX control panel and it seems to have helped quite a bit. Takes away some of the snazzy color I had before the adjustments, although it's not lame like some of the displays I've seen in the past two weeks while shopping for a monitor. I may take it back and go for some other monitor brand.

Have you ever heard of Hansol monitors? I was looking at the specs on the 710D model, and they're pretty good. Although it's not a flat screen, (I've seen other flat screens that had issues as well), it has an optimum resolution of 1280*1024 @ 85 Hz, and max res @ 1600*1200 @75Hz. I wouldn't be using the higher res anyways, probably 1024*768 or 1152*864. The dot pitch is .25mm. By the way, how critical is monitor bandwidth?

I hate KDS monitors. I always used to get dizzy on my old 17" inch KDS!

I second trying out the Samsung 700NF. 1024x768@119Hz with a maximum of 1600x1200@75Hz. I haven't had a bit of eyestrain and has great picture quality.

prontospyder mentions something important - the KDS monitors tend to require higher brightness settings (60 +) for it to look even like a normal monitor, whereas Sony monitors might require it to be at 30 brightness for it to look normal. Just keep that in mind. It's just how they're calibrated, every monitor is different.

Give the Samsung a shot if you want. The 700NF and the AV-7TF should be head to head in quality.
