I bought an NEC ND-3500AG off NewEgg...awesome drive. I was impressed by the stats:

Write Speed: 16X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD+R9, 16X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 48X CD-R, 24X CD-RW
Read Speed: 48X CD-ROM, 16X DVD-ROM
Interface: ATAPI / E-IDE
Buffer: 2MB

So I threw in my Sims 2 DVD-ROM (2.8GB) and ran the Nero speed test. Here are the results:

Avg Speed: 10.31x
Start: 6.50x
End: 13.30x

Type: CLV

Random seek time: 111ms
1/3: 118ms
Full: 172ms

CPU usage:
1x: 9%
2x: 15%
4x: 24%
8x: 44%

Burst rate: 2MB/s

Hmm... so I'm getting around 10x or so on DVD reads? Is that expected? Here are the stats for a CD-ROM with about 550-600MB of data on it:

Avg Speed: 31.40x
Start: 7.84x
End: 40.82x

Type: CAV

Random seek time: 131ms
1/3: 127ms
Full: 175ms

CPU usage:
1x: 1%
2x: 2%
4x: 3%
8x: 12%

Burst rate: 1MB/s

You'd probably get better results with a DVD filled up to capacity under Nero's speed test & same goes for the CD test.

Overall it looks normal & NEC's are more known for their write quality than their speed.

Cool. Thanks.

Hmm.. does this thing have buffer underrun protection? Or is that a thing of the past and is really not necessary?
