My company just had to bust 6 guys for watching scores / games on work time. I've been too busy to check any of it out yesterday or today, but I have observed the hits to sports site skyrocket.

Sucks to be them. Looks like they are losing their year end bonus, and have to go through another 90 day probation period.

WTF ... it takes 20 seconds to check a score..

do you bust the people going to take a piss
or smoke a cig or get a candy bar or drink from the vending machine?

or post on Anandtech!

As long as they get their work done, shouldn't be a problem.

Excellent point ...

basically it's nerd (IT guys) jelousy against jocks (marketing and sales guys)

That's not the issue at all. It seems they were streaming a game in, and all watching in the same office.

That's different then. Your original post made it sound like they were just looking up the scores on CNNSI or ESPN. Streaming can be a hog. My company is pretty liberal about web usage but they absolutely forbid streaming video or sound.

Yeah, 6 bankers sitting in a "conference" and cheering / booing tends to draw some attention.

And I take it that they were warned prior to or during the game?

Sorry but hitting a man in the wallet is almost the same as kickin them in the nuts.

They no doubt agreed to a company policy prohibiting this kind of use. They got caught violating company policy, they paid the price.

I would say they're hitting the company in the wallet by using bandwidth to watch the game and being paid to watch it.

There's some things you just don't do at work.

Hey, that's not my decision. The IDP started kicking out a warning, which sends a report to me, my supervisor, and the president. Standard procedure is that I find out what's going on and determine if it needs to be addressed. El presidente called me up, asked if I knew what was going on, so I told him what it was. After that, all moves were made by him. Being the "cop" sucks, but that's what I'm paid to do.

Yeah, posting on AT might be questionable, but my boss knows how the job is and what I do. I must spend a certain amount of time at my desk addressing software issues, which means waiting for call-backs for our software vendor. He basically said, make sure all your paperwork is done, your desk is organized, and after that I can do anything on the web that I want as long as it doesn't conflict with the company policy.

Heck, my boss brought in sandwiches and we all spent 2-1/2 hours watching the early ballgames. Both yesterday, and today. 🙂

One of the divisions of the company I work for had a big screen in a break room and showed the games. Hey, Nitemare, is that big screen still there in PCD, or did the new le-know-who crew take it away?

So your company actually has their act together enough to be able to track that info AND review it? Either your company is better than most or upper managment is just bored and can't do any real work...

Like that one guy said, if people can go out on smoke breaks, then you should be able to take 20secs and check scores...

Work in the main campus(can't even get 680 in the new office), they have those wall mounted plasma screens in the break room over in the 503 building though :|

Checking scores is one thing. Watching streaming games is another IMO.

My company allows for a lot as long as you get your work done, but streaming games at the office is pushing things. I would work from home and watch there.

Wow, that's F*ed up. I would hate working for a company like that. I need to take mental breaks every 10 minutes just so that I don't go crazy from looking at code or talking to customers all day long.
