NBC is fucking stupid. Period.

They issued an apology that I read in the HuffPo...it basically said "This was the 3rd time we aired the commercial and it was supposed to be shown after Bob Costas...BUT we didnt know he should be talking about Gabby at the very end it was just bad timing....mmkay lolololol"

I didnt find the commercial particularly offensive as a black person...but you know there are some idiots out there that found the juxtaposition of a monkey commercial to comments about a black gymnast to be extremely hilarious or offensive.

I'm not black but Costa's comments made me cringe a little. Seemed like he basically was saying "see young black girls! Gabby is proof you can be just as good as the white kids too!"

At best a very contrived comment that didn't need to be made. Gabby is proof enough, I am pretty sure black girls are smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. And who says the source of their inspiration even needs to be of the same skin color?

Comments like these that make me wonder if they do more than good, by continuing to keep race issues at the forefront, especially during a moment that should be pure celebration, not political.

Would love to hear any opinions from our black colleagues here on ATOT.

It's only racist if you perceive it as racist.

You racist.

Exactly. Too many people try to dissect everything and look for racism... especially where it doesn't exist. In this case, it was bad and unintentional timing, nothing more.

That said, I laughed. :D

I totally agree with you. I don't think everyone should be focusing on how Gabby is the second black girl to make the US Women's Gymnastics Team + Gold Medal and also the first black girl and American to win Gold in the Team final and All Around.

I know for a fact that Gabby wishes to at least inspire black girls to consider Gymnastics but she didnt drool all over the topic like Costas. Basically what she said was "I just want to be an inspiration and I also want black girls to think of this sport as something they can do!".

Yes, we all notice that she is black...but hey, she won a Medal for our COUNTRY not for BLACK PEOPLE.

By continuing to focus on her race, we are only marginalizing her success by making it seem like it was something she wasnt expect to do, you know?

Lots of fucking idiots have their panties in a bunch over that.

Apparently, NBC was supposed to custom tailor the commercial to who Costas was talking about...

What they apparently aren't smart enough to grasp is that NBC was running that commercial regardless of who won...or who Costas was talking about just prior to the commercial.

And I am guessing most of those who are supposedly "offended" are white people from the suburbs, conditioned to seek and identify supposed racism because it makes them good or proof they aren't racist. Or they are the type of people who will see racism in everything.

OP Is racist.

The commercial has been aired since the Olympics started and it was never a problem. Only a problem when it airs after a black person wins a medal.

NBC shouldn't even have apologized. Doing so only legitimizes those who see racism. We need to quit catering to everyone and anyone who might be offended at something, and instead focus on the real and systemic problems that lead to the socioeconomic disparities.

But even using hard facts and statistics to frame such a discussion usually leads to cries of racism from small but vocal subgroups.

The long standing low level problems will not be fixed with political correctness. If anything, political correctness has only made these problems worse as it conditions people vulnerable to political correctness to shy away from such topics and immediately cry racism.

WTF is the internet coming to that the links for this are mostly down? It's like the censor police are able to kill stuff immediately, it's really disconcerting.

Anyway, here is the vid (for now). I'm sure the link will be killed:

If this was not the first time this commercial was aired people need to F off and unwad their panties.

I noticed it instantly the other night.
I grew up in rural-land Ohio though... where black jokes were commonplace.

I could see real racism rage if the monkey was doing a routine that women gymnast do, like a floor routine, uneven bars, etc but since the monkey was doing rings, a male event, I don't see the racism. It's at most a gaff on NBC's part.

Why are most electronics black? Is that racist too?

I am changing my preferences on ATOT to make the background black in solidarity with all my black brothers and sisters who are beaten down by the man. This white background I am using now is racist.
