WASHINGTON — The good news for President Trump in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll — half of which was conducted before and the day of the Helsinki presser with Putin, half of which was conducted afterward — is that his standing with the GOP base is stronger than ever.

The bad news for the president is that his standing — plus the GOP’s — is now worse with independents than it was a month ago. Just 36 percent of independents approve of Trump’s job (down 7 points from June). What’s more, independents prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress by more than 20 points, 48 percent to 26 percent. In June, the Dem lead among indies was just 7 points, 39 percent to 32 percent.
The base has their heels dug in, no matter how bad Trump performs. Thankfully The rest are wising up.

The good news is he isn't a liberal so probably safe as long as he doesn't molest too many children.

Compounded by the 5% drop in voter identification with the Republican party since Nov 2016.

So of course Trump invites Putin to the WH in the fall, right around the midterms.

Doubling down FTW!!1

The bad news is the Trump base votes religiously, while Dems & Independents do not. The Dems have to figure out how to get their base out to vote as religiously as the Repubs do with their base.

The right-wing has become a religious-like cult in this country. With a propaganda outlet who's main theme is "everyone else is lying to you."

Of course they still support him. Cultists support the cult no matter what.

“Trump’s approval rating in the poll is 45 percent among all registered voters (up 1 point from June), while 52 percent disapprove.”

I may be nit picking but while their polling may have included equal numbers form each section that isn’t reality.

I smell setup that his stupid base will fall for.

Trump and Putin will agree that Trump can push back on him in public. It will be in the fall before the mid terms and now righties have their talking point that Trump is tough on Putin.

GOP already get close to their mid term peak. Dems and Independants have a lot more room to grow. At least some good news.

With democrats lionizing the members and policies of the DSA, I can say both parties lie open to the charge of catering to their bases at the expense of the middle.

Only one side is supportive of treason and a willing party to it. That's sort of important.

The thing of it is if X number of people support Trump "harder" they still don't get more of a vote. These people aren't going to win elections when the number of voters against Reps increases.

That's not important. Human children are important.

Republicans are not willing parties to treason. Don't exaggerate things.

88% of Republicans think trump is doing the right stuff. His problem though is that only 27% of voters are Republican. 27% x 88% = 24%. which is the size of his "base" - which ain't growing.

Where do you draw the distinction between complicit and willing? I would argue that the House GOP is willing while the senate is complicit.

Not treasonous, certainly.

So say Trump is actually guilty of colluding with Russia in some form....and the GOP House has been actively trying to obstruct, oppose and discredit the investigation. What do you call that?
