Well what's sad is that a comedian is better at journalism than journalists. It's largely due to how we now live in a Fox News world. Where supposed "news" organizations have come to the conclusion that they thrive better by telling specific groups of people what they want to hear, even if it's blatantly not true.

No, it was not any different before Fox News became so popular. The way the whole mainstream tv media works is that they get these politicians and establishment figures to get to trot out their tired old canned lines, without pointing out the obvious hypocrisies. In return, the TV networks get the audience because these big names show up on their shows.

The entire frame of reference is flawed, regardless of any political side. It is one big incestuous family, the whole media / establishment thing in America.

I think it's pretty sad that a news organization would even consider a comedian for one of the oldest and what once was a prestigious news show.

It says a lot about where journalism and journalists are in this country, quality wise.

agreed

why would it be sad? Just because he's funny shouldn't bar him from a serious minded role.

ivwshane was indicting journalism, not Stewart.
And I would hazard to guess that Stewart's reaction to the request was similar:
"I'm a comedian. I do a comedy show. Maybe if you guys weren't so horrible at your job, people wouldn't need to trust me more than you...but that was never my goal" This is pretty much his response whenever he appears on actual ...."news programs" and the desk-minder asks him about the public's perception of him as a reliable source.

Exactly.

I think he does care more than you give him credit for. After all NBC was willing to pay quite a lot if the source is accurate. If he didn't care as you say why not go for the cash?

On the daily show he still gets to interview policy makers and has more freedom to lambaste people / subjects that he wouldn't have working for an establishment bubble Sunday show.

He may be a douchenozzle but he's at least funny... compared to the douchenozzles that couldn't joke their way out of a paper bag and tried a split-S at 200 ft and slammed into the ground.

Like I said, I don't fault him for who he is and don't consider it a bad thing, but my opinion doesn't change - he really doesn't care, especially if he turned this down, which he knows he couldn't do anyway - or maybe he could force it, but would hate it.

I'm guessing most folks here have experience with him just from TDS.

Nope I've seen him host at least one show before The Daily Show.

If he knows that he would have had to compromise what he does on the Daily Show then, imo, it does speak well of him to refuse. Especially if the offer was as substantial as the source indicates.

Also the subject matter that he chose for the film he directed during his recent hiatus doesn't seem indicative of someone who just "doesn't care".

As for our difference of opinion well /shrug neither is going to convince the other.

Stewart is still better than 99% of the news reporters out there, if the people listening aren't bright enough to not be able to filter out reality from satire is the biggest problem I suppose.

Most of what he does is satire lite to begin with compared to the stories.

Obviously not. You just say "he doesn't care" then don't even offer anything to support your assertion.

I offer information that could show that he does care even if only a little bit.

Must be you're just here to show how much less that you care than the subject of this thread.

He should have taken it. Jon Stewart is not what he used to be.

Jon Stewart should actually drop the humor from his show these days. I used to agree 100% with Jon Stewart and these days I really don't. He's become... facebook stupid? Hard to explain. He just does whatever is popular anymore instead of whats right.
