espn story

Its a shocker seeing Bowen get traded but he's pretty old. I've always thought of Jefferson as fairly inconsistent and unreliable, but being under Pops will do him good. Oberto is no Scola either, so the spurs didn't give up much in acquiring 20pts a game.

Richard Jefferson

Bruce Bowen
Fabricio Oberto
Kurt Thomas

($13.2m vs. total $11.8m)

/edit: as the article and dougp pointed out:

Bowen: might be released and then re-sign with spurs
Oberto: heart problems, possible retirement

Bowen will more than likely be cut by the Bucks and resigned by the Spurs.

Thomas might play another year, but Oberto is probably going to retire due to his heart condition.

Should help breathe new life into an aging Spurs squad. Only wish the Cavs could've landed him instead. :(

Spurs are my team. Bowen's defense is pretty much gone now cus he's so old. Kurt Thomas was also a decent defender but he's old as well. Oberto.......well yea I'll just leave it at that.

The Spurs have been trying to get younger and younger. They added some decent young pieces with Mason and Hill this past year. Mason had a his best season and his 3 shooting was awesome. Hopefully this will give them the boost in points they need to get some heat off Parker/Duncan/Ginobili when he comes back since Duncan and Ginobili have been having health problems these past couple years. He won't get as many touches as he did in Milwaukee and won't score as much but will help them. Pops will help build him defensively as well.

They better do more than that if they think they are going to compete with a lineup of Bryant, Odom, Ariza, Fisher, Bynum (assuming Odom and Ariza sign. Ive heard San Antonio might bid for Ariza)

No need to bid for him now that they have Jefferson.

With that in mind it pretty much makes it a no brainer for the spurs imo.

Guaranteed the Lakers wont have the same lineup as they did this year. There is no way they will be able to resign both Odom and Ariza. It is going to be impossible. VERY VERY wishful thinking on your part.

Yea almost no one ever takes a pay-cut. They're obviously going to put themselves out there and see how much they can get. Either way, I'd keep Ariza over Odom.

Why? Im not saying it is 100% going to happen, but it is possible. The economy is putting a damper on the larger contracts, and the Lakers made an extra $4mil for every playoff game at Staples this year.

Buss might pay the luxury tax if he thinks it is necessary to go on another run...

spurs can easily run with that squad if they can get deeper at center.

Edited the title...I wouldn't want any spurs fans to get their hopes up that high, even for a brief moment, lol.

Not a good day for pretty much the rest of the NBA. As long as they can stay healthy, this is going to be a damn good team this coming season.

If Byum is back to 90%, they really don't need Odom anymore. They can run with Byum, Pau, Kobe, Fisher and Ariza.

Looks like Spurs can run with Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, Jefferson, and some center.

If you want to go small, which I'm assuming you would by "run" then your line up would be:

C - Duncan
F - Richardson
F - Ginobili
G - Mason / Hill (Depends on the defense/speed requirements)
G - Parker

The only case you have is Kobe is a better player than Mason, but:

Duncan >> Gasol
Richardson >>>> Bynum
Ginobili >>>>>>>>>>> Ariza
Mason/Hill <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Kobe
Parker >>>> Fischer

If the Spurs are able to sign Gortat, Wallace, Boozer, McDyess or some other combo and resign Thomas if he's cut - they just developed a DEEP bench along with one hell of a starting line up. Lakers won't resign both Ariza and Odom.

Thats why the Spurs got owned. Manu always gets hurt and Ariza is getting WAY better than he ever was/will be, Duncan is getting old and slow, Bynum is developing.

Their run is done....

Excuse me, what? Manu is healed, and if you think Ariza is ever going to be the player Manu is, you have another thing coming. Manu is going to the Hall of Fame, Ariza probably won't even scratch the surface of qualifying. Duncan might be aging, but guess who's the same age as him? Yah, Kobe.

I understand your team just won and all, but it's not going to be the same as it was this year.

Edit: Oops, looks like Pau is only 29, my bad ... but Fischer is up there also. Kobe is 31 at the start of the season, Duncan just turned 33.
