All professional sports are full of stories like this. Some guys simply aren't good enough. They take their shot and miss. Some of the stories about guys that uprooted their entire life as teenagers and went to an academy for soccer and then don't make it are pretty sad.

for nfl teams, any player that was on the roster at any point during the season will get a ring, even practice squad members

but teams have wide discretion and can give rings to whoever they want. I think for instance the Colts gave Edgerrin James a ring when they won the year after he left

http://www.answers.com/Q/Do_NFL_practice_squad_members_get_a_Super_Bowl_ring

The NFL pays for 150 rings to be distributed by the Super Bowl winning team. The team may distribute them however they wish. Should the team decide they want to give out more than 150 rings, they must pay for the cost of the rings after the 150.

So not only do practice squad members get rings but ball boys, trainers, secretaries, among others, probably get one also.

thats neat for nfl players.

but I wouldn't feel so great about getting the ring if I left a team the previous season.
what story am I going to tell? i wasn't part of the winning team even for a day.

Didn't Cavs owner Dan Gilbert sell the 2016 champ ring to any takers, or was that a cheaper replica?
