? These are paid by taxpayers?

Anyway, the NBA may have the highest per player salary of all the sports if I'm not mistaken. A-Rod makes like $25 million per year however. Salaries are increasing for most major sports.

I believe what he's saying is that stadiums are built with tax money, so by basically subsidizing sports teams we're allowing them to pay such absurd salaries.

And he has a good point, if teams can afford to pay those salaries they don't need us to build them stadiums.

They don't need us to build them stadiums and I doubt anyone is forcing the city to do so. As such, I assume the city recoups (or hopes to recoup) all the money it spends and more in the form of residual business...

Ah... Mussolini's favorite apology for the economic system he devised.

Half of the player's salary goes to taxes

Well at least they only have to pay social security tax on the first 90k they make, everything after that is not taxed by social security. After that they only have to pay 35% unless they live in a state with a state income tax.

Which is nearly all states.

Give me a buck and I'll give you back 50 cents. Sounds like you'll think that's a good deal.

Nope. But these athletes are not starving.

You said "Your tax dollars at work."

I took that to mean that taxes somehow make these athletes rich.

Taxes actually make them poorer... by nearly half their salary.

I wonder if any player thinks about cost of living when they sign a fat deal with a team. I mean 100 mil sounds a lot. But in california the millions you spend to buy a home here can get you a way larger one with money left over to buy other stuff with elsewhere

But their salaries shouldn't be what' stupid. the ridiculous thing is they get stipends when they are on the road. This is on top of their salary. the show NBA Rookies alluded to this last year.

JR Smith the hornets rookie, he pocketed the money they gave him, some 500 bucks or so for theri week long road trip. It was meant for food and other stuff. JR ends up buying candy and cheap stuff.

Taxes do make them rich. YOUR taxes, not theirs. If your local government subsidized some local industry in your town, while outlawing all competition, I'm sure the owners and managers there could make a lot more money.

And poorer by half their salary... LMAO! You realize that half their annual salary is still more than the average worker makes in their lifetime, right?

No wonder Sprewell couldn't feed his family. He only made $96.6 million, as opposed to Shaq who made enough to feed his family.

CBA is a basketball league.

Taxes pay for what? Stadiums and needed infustructure? How much is that? $150 million?

Then anything having to do with the league gets taxed to hell!
From concessions to hotel tax to salaries. Even the gas to get to the stadium gets taxed.

The government gets it's money back and then some!

Except the local governments don't have authoritarian power and have to worry about re-election...

juwan howard? WTF? #1-20 all seems to belong up there because of some point in their careers... but juwan howard??? what has he done? WTF??!?!? 😕

Closer to a billion dollars all told (stadiums run around $500 million, then add infrastructure costs).

You are confused. The government does not profit. It subsidizes. Profit goes to private interests (the owners and the players). Investment, risk, and loss are burdened by the public. It's perfect economic fascism.

If you want to continue to believe otherwise, then paypal me $100 so I can give you back $50. Hell of a deal!
Or... let's go into business together where you put in all the start-up capital, but I get the lion's share of the profits! Hell of a plan!

For MJ:

1985 $550,000
1986 $630,000
1987 * $737,500
1988 $845,000
1989 $2,000,000
1990 * $2,250,000
1991 $2,500,000
1992 $3,250,000
1993 $4,000,000
1994 $4,000,000
1995 $3,850,000
1996 $3,850,000
1997 $30,140,000
1998 $33,140,000
2002 $1,000,000
2003 $1,030,000
Career (may be incomplete) $93,772,500

Why did it jump from $3mill to $30mill in one year?

And by the way, that Salary Career Leader stat is useless. Any player making $5million/year now will out earn way better players that were in the game 20 years ago.

What's wrong with pocketing a per diem? It would be dumb if you HAD to spend the $500 on food and housing. This is common even in regular jobs for consultants. People shouldn't be punished because they live LESS extravagant lifestyles. Nor should they get the money taken back, because then everyone would eat lobster every night just because otherwise the money is gone.

Juwan Howard is #6 of all time? What in the fvck? That overrated jobber.

MJ isn't near the top but got to take into account he's made more off endorsements than probably any athlete in the history of sports. At the top he was untouchable.

Not to mention he had a few seasons where he didn't play. He'd be FAR FAR past shaq on salary if he made what he made his last years as a Bulls.... I think it was something like 32 million a year.

You are confusing government with private bussiness.

The government gets a percentage of every dollar you make for life. For rich people it is almost half.

They get their money back easily!!

I think that was around his first comeback.

The league basically needed him due to lagging ratings.
