NBA Bans Twitter at Games

According to a memo sent out to teams today, no mobile or other communication devices are to be used from 45 minutes before a game starts until after the players have finished performing their athletic duties, including postgame locker room interviews. The ban affects players, coaches, and "basketball operations personnel." We are unclear whether cheerleaders are included in this perplexingly named category.

We're also not sure whether this ban applies to the official NBA Twitter account, which has more than 1.4 million followers, or to any of the myriad team Twitter accounts. What we do know is that the NBA will now be treating social media content the same way it would treat comments made to traditional media outlets.

The complete list of NBA players affected by this decision is staggering, but the ban also applies to other forms of social media, such as Facebook status updates. It would even prohibit the sending of text messages and emails during the prescribed time limits.

I don't get this

Twitter would have IMPROVED the game's popularity and marketability. God Stern can be a idiot sometimes (He's made some good decisions, e.g. banning hip-hop clothing - I'm all for throwback jerseys, etc but it wasn't marketable to the majority of sportwatchers).

I'm starting to get into the concept actually. TBH I think fb should be able to do it alot better since they have the membership base to drive this. Twitter is so heavily pushed by the Media its not funny.

Actually, thinking off the top of my head, I reckon it is

  • FB for twittering to your friends
  • Twitter for twittering to the outstide world

Hence mostly celebs and people up themselves use twitter :) Basically, I doubt many people would want to give up fb level privacy (photos/friends/profile updates etc) to the outside world. Perhaps fb should a twitter option for its users - available to the whole world but the whole world can only see your facebook twitter page as opposed to your whole profile.

My favorite professional sports restriction is the disclaimer the NFL has on each of their boardcasts now. Basically it amounts to "You can't even TALK about the game with ANYONE EVER unless you get written consent from us first."

- "So John, how about that Lions game last week! Did you see they actually won!"
- "Shh... can't talk about it. The NFL will sue us into oblivion!"

Attacking professionalism of the sport I guess.

I'm not entirely sure it increases the marketability however. An NBA player can say something really damning to the sport or team just as easily as he can promote it. Everybody knows what mass media can do and how they can interpret statements.

I guess they've had issues with players tweeting stupid things in the heat of the moment.

So the NBA can "fix" the Twitter / social media "problem" within a year of it cropping up, but can't address the horrible officiating and downright scandals among refs? Good work David Stern

I've never been remotely interested in Twitter. Myspace is fail, except for looking up your favorite bands... Facebook is now overloaded w/ crap as well. Facebook lite is the only thing I really look at.

What is all this tweet nonsense from athletes? I know they all think they're so important, but even the NFL guys are doing it at halftime and such.

Good.

I really don't see why it was allowed in the first place considering how much they limit every other form of communication during the game.

I, too, giggle when I hear that at the end of the game.
