I've got a gigabyte p965-s3 mobo and the chipset cooling is awful so I was wondering if there are any good heatsinks for cooling off my particular mobo. Thanks.

well, for the north bridge, you could get the Thermalright HR-05 IFX for your northbridge.

and for the southbridge, if you have a dual slot video card and only 1 PCI card, you could get the Thermalright HR-05 IFX/SLI or if you have a single slot video card, then you can get the standard HR-05 IFX. Then pick up a pair of slim 80mm fans and you'll be all set.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know they were so expensive. Almost same price as cpu HSF

If doing some higher overclocking I wouldn't reccomend going passive. If you don't need top of the line cooling you can get the non IFX thermalright heatsinks to save yourself some money, though not a whole lot. Passive on the southbridge sould be no big deal so long as it fits around your video card(s) but, I'd definately go active on the northbridge. Keep in mind any aftermarket solution is probably going to be better than what's on there now.

I'm not even sure the heatsinks on the low-end gigabyte boards (i have a DS3L) are metal... It looks like plastic on mine.

Oh, they're all metal. Even my old sh!tty DELLs had sinks that looked plastic but when you flicked them, sounded metal.

I never heard of a plastic heat sink. Plastic is not a very good conductor of heat. A lot of sinks are aluminum and just plated to look like copper or brass.

I have a 140mm fan pointed at the motherboard instead of putting a noisy small fan on the northbridge.

Derwin, I did put a small 40mm fan on the NB so thats ok. What surprised me was how hot the SB was. I think Blue is right that it might be plastic as it looks really cheap.

It's just a cheap aluminum alloy. DFI used to use the same thing and we protested so much that I think they only use them on their ACP products now, I'm pretty sure even the infinity's don't use them anymore.

Those glue on heastinks work pretty well, I used a black one a number of years back on my NF2 board's southrbridge and it worked pretty well, just keep in mind you're going to have to epoxy it on so your board will no longer be covered under warranty.

I also do recommend Thermalright HR-05 series. They're the best stuff that Thermalright makes, IMO, rather than their overrated CPU heat sinks.
