I mean do we have to waste time and money on this case? Think about all the stress this guy has endured with losing his citizenship, getting it back, now having to do this at age 85?????

we all know how serious the halocaust was and it will never be forgotten, but this seems a bit much. What does this accomplish? Because the gov't cant make their mind up he has to suffer, what a bunch of crap.

can someone please explain to me why the US cant just let him live his last few years in peace?

Has not been proven. Hell, the government can't even figure out which possible Nazi camp guard he may have possibly been.

I thought they had his Nazi military ID? They were showing it on the news.

They accused him of being Ivan the Terrible and now they claim he is a different camp guard.

How much peace did he let his victims feel in their last minutes, days, weeks, etc? Just because he skated for all this time should not mean he should get off scott free.

What is accomplishes is justice. And while it may be cost a lot of money, it is a long time coming.

And the stress he has 'suffered' all these years... it must pale by comparision to teh stress of being locked in a camp with a brutal guard before being burned in an over.

i have ZERO sympathy for him. and i think the waste of money was in all these appeals. they should have dealt with him immediately after being found guilty and saved the money that was wasted on appeals.

After what he was found guilty of... he had the nerve to appeal on the grounds that he might get tortured by being departed!!!

There is no statute of limitations for Murder and torture.

If he is guilty of those crimes, he should suffer.
If he is not guilty, then these court dealings have been an injustice to him, however, this injustice is far less severe then what he is being accused of.

he needs to be found guilty without any reasonable doubt, to me there is doubt about exactly what he did.

KarenMarie, there is obvious reasonable doubt in this case...the government can't even decide which guard he may have possibly been.

Without knowing the evidence it is hard to come to a reasonable conclusion.

The fact that they got his identity wrong once already is concerning. I am generally very wary of prosecutors since their aim is usually just to win (for various reasons) regardless of if justice is actually being done.

Agreed. To me this case stinks of a prosecutor looking to make a name for himself nailing one of the few remaining Nazis....his guilt is inconsequential.

I have my reservations as well. That's why my post is moreso "on the fence" rather then taking a side.

why let him go, cause he is an old man?

let him be tried in his native Ukraine. he deserves no santuary here.

I don't care how old he is or what his role was exactly, justice needs to be served.

But the government already F'd up once.....for everyone here supporting his deportation imagine you're in his situation and the feds say to you 'you're this horrible person..get out of the country.....oh wait you're not this horrible person...but...um....we think you're this other person now....leave'. Sounds like they're just covering their asses

His Defense said that the Russians forged the ID to discredit Demjanjuk. Demjanjuk said that he was in a camp up unti 1944 and then he had to join an anti-russian army until the germans surrendered. The prosecution says that he was a guard in THREE camps. One of them Sobibor were at least 1/4 million of people were killed. He was a soviet soldier, then he was captured by the germans and he decided to join the germans to save his own life, he witnessed the horrors of concentration camps and he didn't do anything. He doesn't deserve to die in this country.

Hmmm....

It seems that I am going to have to reconsider my above post. As cocky as I can be most of the times, I am not too proud to admit when I am incorrect (too hard to say wrong 😉 )

After doing some research on this case... I am hearing... right now on BBC Radio 4... that he was cleared on all charges in a case of mistaken identy. They are saying that the Isreali government declined to charge him with any thing else and let it go. The charges and stuff he is going thru is all about immigration status and nothing else.

The holocaust is a touchy subject... and after looking a little further, i will admit that i do not know what the hell this guy did, if anything... but in any case... the main point is that i should not have posted without knowing the facts of the case.

i posted on emotion and opinion without much research. i should know better than that.

if this guy is guiilty of anything... he should be tried and if found guilty punished.

Kudos for admitting a possible mistake. 🙂
